Can anyone point me to the documentation for using the Windows-XP BOINC Manager to monitor other local machines? I am unable to locate how to configure the various computers (Linux, W2K, etc) to allow remote connection and then connect via DHCP-provided addresses. Do I need to set-up DNS internally and use hostname, or are there other options? (I'd prefer just to provide a list of IP addresses that are known to run the code, even if they randomly change within that list.) THANKS! |

I have my Windows machines in a workgroup. Then on my Linux machine I run Samba so that it can talk in Microsoft. Actually I have it set up to be the 'Wins' server on my small network. That way all my machines register their addresses with the server and all can talk to each other using only their names. IP lookup is automatic. I assigned the WINS server a static IP so that all the others can find it at bootup and register. Good luck, David Stites Pullman, WA USA |

In each BOINC directory, you have to store two text files : gui_rpc_auth.cfg with either a password if you want (little) security or nothing in remote_host.cfg with the list of machines allowed to contact the local machine (either name of the machine or IP if fixed) You will then be able to connect to remote machines giving the remote machine's name and the password stored in the remote boinc directory. You could also consider using BoincView, a nice tool to monitor remote BOINC apps. Only working for Windows unfortunately, but I tried it and i love it. In each BOINC directory, you have to store two text files : BTW: BoincView runs on a Windows machine, but will monitor Boinc projects on Linux machines. |

BTW: BoincView runs on a Windows machine, but will monitor Boinc projects on Linux machines. You can also run BOINC View under Wine if I got that right... and it ALSO monitors OS-X cleints too ... Read up on the term "Remote hosts file" for some help. Also, in the menu option, I think we also talk to how that works from a BOINC perspective ... As always, try the Wiki first ... I have no idea how many links we have, but I know my associate editors probably hate me for the extra work I put the too ... but, the whole point is if you can start at the top end of the food chain you can find EVERY other link to other material, definitions. So, use that front page wisely and drill down ... |

Read all about it in the WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI WIKI For anyone who can update the WIKI, you might want to mention that on an Win_XP/Server_2003 remote client you need to allow boinc.exe as an exception to the firewall. This would also apply to any other firewall you may be running such as ZoneAlarm or many others. |

The only place I can think of is to add it to the trouble shooting ow-to guide as a step, but, place the material in separate guide. I have some material on that problem area but have not added it yet. Heck, yesterday I could not walk, so, it is going to be sme time bfore I will get to that ... |
