After uninstalling and reinstalling the new client I get the above messages.

Please advise if I am doing something wrong.

You are not doing anything wrong. The message you get indicates that there is no work available from the SETI server at the moment. There has been a problem at the server end with producing the workunits, so there is a general shortage! The "Deferring communication...." indicates how long BOINC will wait before asking the server again for some more work. It may be deferred again if there is still nothing available. Keep an eye on the News section of the site for further information. Wait it out and you will get some work in good time!
