Prior to installing BOINC, I started getting messages telling me that seti@home had unexpectedly quit. After installing BOINC, I am still getting those messages. Am I supposed to delete the old seti app? I must say the BOINC install and implementation instructions are poor if not non-existent. |

The old program seems to run at a higher priority than BOINC - trying to run both just processes Classic WUs at about 90% speed, while taking forever to handle SETI/BOINC WUs. You don't have to delete the app, but I'd definitely take it out of your Login Items list. The "unexpected quits" are strange unless the app has gotten corrupted. I'd definitely run Repair Permissions and Verify Disk, just in case it's a symptom of drive problems. (And warning, if you are on Tiger, DO NOT use the AppleCare "TechTool" disk utility...) Agreed on the "instructions"... they actually exist and are pretty good, but first you have to find them! The WIKI seems to be the best place. |

As a long time user of seti classic on macintosh I have just began configuring the new BOINC setup. I consider myself an "expert" Mac user, having been involved in complex system, video and network setups since the dawn of electricity. But I have been reduced to severe headscratching whilst setting BOINC up. In fact I am now bald. Sheesh, SETI people put a link to intelligent setup instructions on the FRONT PAGE!!!!!!! jeez Mark |

Agreed... I've only been here a few weeks myself, and I went through the same headscratching. http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page is the "WIKI", the 3rd-party documentation for all of this. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the SETI folks won't put a link to that (or much else useful...) on their pages. Likewise, for almost-familiar stats, you have to use an external site. I use http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/index.php (put your name in and hit search, then bookmark the resulting URL). I still haven't gotten any graphics to work without either crashing or slowing everything to a crawl, but at least I'm getting a clue on everything else now! And picking up projects other than SETI to fill in the gaps when the SETI servers are down or slow. |

As a long time user of seti classic on macintosh I have just began configuring the new BOINC setup. Well, there isn't room on the front page for all the instructions, for all the platforms. I agree though that a clear link would be helpful. Right now almost all development issue is focused on the network issues and new clients that are being debugged. Many of the solutions will come down the road. Just as an FYI though, the problems with BOINC are nothing compared to the Startup of SETI Classic, and SETI Classic was a much simpler project science wise and system wise. Interestingly though, I had no problems getting started with BOINC other then the development issues, and that was back with the "original" Closed Beta team. I'm not a geek either, but did take time to look over what "very little" information was there. The biggest thing is "Don't think in SETI classic terms" when dealing with BOINC. It is a whole new beast. Progress must go on. Team MacNN - The best Macintosh team ever. |
