I have seen many people in here under the statistics with computers comparable to one of mine (p4 3.0, win xp, 1 gig ram, etc...) who post much, MUCH more recent credit and overall credit than I do. What am I missing here? Is there a command line client that I can run on XP that is much faster like I used to use for seti classic? Or do I need to adjust some un-thought of setting? I have a few computers running seti/boinc, but see people with just one computer putting up more credit than I do, and I'm stumped. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You may want to look into optimized clients.

www.marisan.nl may have everything you need if you are running Windows and links to study up on the subject.

You may also want to look at
Installing an "Optimized" SETI@Home Science Application - Microsoft Windows®
This the BOINC Wiki for accomplishing what you want... It also provides a table for the specific Computer/CPU for a quick reference.

The Current Forum Discussion
YAOSCW r8.1 (optimized client for Windows) Talks about the performance gains.

Then Marisans
Optimised Seti clients Which shows all the Options...

You may want to look at your hardware configuration. If your system uses single channel rams and you're running only one stick, then you may want to install a matched stick (Same type and speed). I tried it on my dell dimension 3000 with a P4 2.8gHZ and my system speed has improved. By how much? I don't know. SETI@Home's DNS woes hit me before i could download my next 106 second work unit. But after installing sticks in both slots (PC3200-400MHZ) my last work unit was 41% complete at 1hour and 16 seconds. It finished that unit in just over two hours. Before my average CPU time per unit was 3 hours and 15 minutes. That seemes significant.

Remember those page mode 486 systems? Remember wait states?

Try it and see what happens.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Optimized clients definitly provide a BIG boost. About a 30% increase on my low end Celeron machine.

My early attempts at boosting the power input to the PC from 110v to 220v also worked, but only for a very, very short time ;)

You may also want to un-hide your computer when you are trying to get help. It will help those that are trying to understand what sort of problem that you are having.

Which I HOPE is correct ... I could only test two of the Intel entries (with SSE2 no SSE3, and with SSE3) ... if there are errors discovered ... well i can fix the table. THough the steps should be clear enotug that it will sowk .. sigh ... sorry ,, time to stop ...

OK, I downloaded the Optimized client for my antique AMD K6 2. I got the plainvanilla client. Installed the optimized files and successfully downloaded and began working a new WU. Is it usual to not be able to view the graphics when the optimized client is running?

Paul,

Your links to Ned's client aren't valid.

Yeah, he changed them... :(

Worse, they don't match the other data I have ... can someone smart about this help me get this right? Ned is pointing to different binaries than I have in the other column, so, if Ned is right, the other column is wrong. If I am right, then neds links are wrong ... look at this http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Installing_an_%22Optimized%22_SETI%40Home_Science_Application_-_Microsoft_Windows%C2%AE#Selecting_the_Correct_Version_of_the_Optimized_Science_Application ...

Sigh, guys I am way over my head ... help! Help! I be drowniing ...

I think you should remove the links to the individual apps and just link to the site where they can be found. This is something that people that use it will have to stay on top of. An outdated optimized app is more of a problem than just running the default app.

Sorry I don't have time to do it myself right now, and add the big bold warning to keep the optimized app updated.

The graphics don't work with the optimized clients I have tried. It would just slow things down.

Thanks Bob,
I don't use the screensaver, but I do like to occasionally watch a round or two of the processing graphically. Just finished putting the Optimized client on my other older machine. A PII 450. It was doing a WU in 12 hours, we'll see how it does with the Optimized client. The AMD box is still chewing on it's WU. It was doing a WU in about 24 hours. Seems to be on track to be about the same.

The optimized apps are compiled without Graphics to simplify the build and to increase the speed of the crunching.

98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.
