its no wonder they have problems

these cpu's are ancient 199x

maybe they should consider porting over to linux
for some athlon 64 loveing

or getting some newer sparc's?

I am sure that once you send them your computers from home with more processing power they will be glad to set it up. Until then, every think maybe they don't have the money to do it?

Doesn't mean they are all used for one thing, or even that they are all "good" PCs

Seti doesn't have the funds. Their priority is Coffee, donuts, pizza, soda[not diet] and electricity bill.
Not necessaryly in that order. Coffee is definitely first. If the lights go out at least they have the energy to get on the bike generator. whoa nelly!!!! someone forgot to clamp down the bike!!!

Something tells me they have more than just SETI/BOINC on their plate that gets money too.. But don't forget that before they can buy new computers, they have to pay the staff that keeps this up and running.. Basically, as has been reciently discussed.. Unless they are for profit (SETI) then they wont have money. So unless you want to pay to crunch, just wait, and eventually, things will speed up.

It could also be that the tasks they're being asked to run are just not compute-bound, but I/O bound.

If they are limited by I/O, then speeding up the CPU won't help much.

I still think something like this would help.

Did you see the size of that thing? I have computer envy now.

P.S. The data sheet has a picture of it under a desk.

This machine would make a good client as that is what it is intended to do. But, not for the back end. Different machines for different purposes.

"The system that will be installed at EPFL will occupy the floor space of about four refrigerators, and will have a peak processing speed of at least 22.8 trillion floating-point operations per second (22.8 teraflops), making it one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world."

I want one of these. I just need to find a way to throw my brother out of his room so I can fit this in.

Yo, Cake Boy... don't you know this is the era of Anti-Science? There's no money for real science right now. All the money must be spent on convincing the world that Intelligent Design is The Truth. Seti might actually prove otherwise, so no money!

See how that works?
