Message 148572 - Posted: 8 Aug 2005, 11:20:17 UTC

Just after the last outage, one of my machines tried
to get new work units, and I got an error message
that said
"Message from server: No work sent"
"Message from server: reached daily quota of 2 results"

This machine is a P4 3.4GHz with H/T. It does 2 work
units at a time, in approximately 3 hours. This is the only machine that seems to have had it's quota
reduced to 2 work units per day. Is there any way to fix this problem to get back to the normal 50 work unit quota? It's a waste of time to only be able to get 3 hours of work per day for the machine. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Regards, Daniel.

You had a bunch of download errors on that host. This is what reduced your quota on that host. As you download, process, and upload more units without error on that host, the quota on that host will increase. It is already up to 4 units (from the last 2 valid results you have returned from that host). Be patient.

That computer had a slew of download errors this weekend. From the results listing of one of them:
<core_client_version>4.19</core_client_version>
<message>app_version download error: couldn't get input files:
setiathome_4.18_windows_intelx86.exe: signature verification error

</message>
<active_task_state>0</active_task_state>
<signal>0</signal>

When you have errors, missed deadlines and other problems, your quota goes down. The good thing is that, for each valid work unit you return, your quota doubles to the max of 100/day/cpu. When I looked just now, you were up to 4/day/cpu and had six sitting on your computer. As long as the errors have stopped, it'll rise quickly now with no further action needed.

Ok, thanks much for the info. I was just looking at the download errors.
The errors cleared up once I started using a proxy server. I still can't
connect and UL/DL without using a proxy server, it seems. All the trouble
began right after the first 5 hour outage. Before that, I never had to use
a proxy server. At least I know the quota will rise with no more errors.
Thanks again for the info. Now, if they could just fix the problem that is causing me to have to use a proxy server.... Oh well, at least it works for now...

Regards, Daniel.

I know there is another thread in this forum that is dealing with the ul/dl problems and having to use proxies. One person in particular has gathered up some data and forwarded it on to the dev team. From what he's been saying it doesn't look like it is so much in the BOINC archetecture as it is in one of the networks close to or inside Berkeley.

I have a comparable fast machine and exactly the same problem - is there a workaround?

Attach to a second project so you will have some work until the quota rises.

Do you mean this computer? 0 results, 0/day quota, I don't know how you'd get the quota up again with no outstanding work units. I'd suggest detatching this computer from SETI, remove it from your account, then re-attach the computer. Start from scratch. The credit you've already earned is safe, you've got nothing to lose. You should, though, try and find out why your quota got knocked so low. Work not returned on time? Errors uploading and/or downloading? Keep an eye on it for a while, so if it starts to tank you can fix it.

@MJ - looks like Spif may have already done that. I see 2 machines under his account. The second one 1151537 has 25 results and several of them show client error.

Now that you got the answer can I ask how many machines you have running at the farm to get those credit and RAC numbers?

After they get the validator cought up you can almost dubble the work you do by swithcing to an optomized SETI unit you can almost dubble the work you do.

Two machines, true, but one is an AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ Pentium, the other is a GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz - I don't think they're the same. 8-) The Pentium still has a 100/cpu/day quota, the Athlon is down to 0. That one might as well be removed, and if it's still in service, get re-attached, and its problems diagnosed. I looked at some of the errors on the active computer, but don't know German to decipher them.

Ray, I currently have 17 machines crunching away at SETI. Apparently, whatever
the problem was that required me to use a proxy server has now been corrected.
All of my machines are currently connecting, uploading, and downloading
perfectly. The original problem that originated this thread has also been
corrected. My thanks to those who steered me in the right direction. I guess
I should have researched the problem a little more before posting, but I was
working on less than 2 hours of sleep at the time...

Regards, Daniel.

Quite a few, makes my one look slow like I have done little, but also work on other programs.

During the long outage SSL had changed the IP address of SETI, and it took a while for the DNS servers to change. After my ISP's DNS server changed for some reasion it would change back from time to time so I would have to put the IP address in, than next time it would work without the IP address. Your ISP could have had the same problem. The DNS server whare I connect up seems to be sending it correct now but keep the new ip handy.

You can get SETI Clients that are optomized for your computers at:
http://www.marisan.nl/seti/

These will allow you to accuratley process about twice as many work units a day. They also have a link to CPU-Z which will tell you if you have SSE, SSE2 or SSE3 That new one should have SSE3. I am running a P4 2.4 Gig and finishing them on about 1 Hr. 40 Min. each so you should probably do 2 an hour with these units.

Cheers

Ray, thanks for the link to the optimized clients. I will definitely check that
out. I already have cpuz. As long as the optimized clients will provide
uncorrupted results, I am all for crunching as many WUs in as little time as
possible, provided that the results are accurate, and the science doesn't
suffer. I enjoy the competition for credit, but for me, it is a secondary
concern- the science comes first.

Regards, Daniel.

No problem, always willing to help another cruncher if I can. To bad that we can't turn the credits into something we could use like more computers. Anyone think we could sell then to Bill Gates?
