I'd like to download more than 2 WU's per computer before tomorrow's outage so they don't run out of work.

In general preferences, I changed the following setting from 0.1 to 1.0 a couple days ago:

Connect to network about every X (determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days)

However, it doesn't seem to be having any effect, so I just increased it to 2 days. Any idea how long it will take to see the WU's stack up? Is there something I'm missing?

The Wiki page on Work Buffer gave a good explanation of the caching concept & recommendations on the setting, but nothing on the behavior or timing of making a change to the setting.

Have you clicked the update button in the projects tab of boinc manager? The new settings take effect after your boinc client connects to the server.

Greetings,
Sander

Also, are you only running Seti, or are you running multiple projects?

If the latter, then why worry? Your CPU will have things to do, while everyone attached to Seti only will have the trouble that they need to do something else with their expensive computer(s)! ;)

Eventually, 3 additional WU's were downloaded before the outage.
This gave 5 to work on, which lasted for most (but not all) of the outage. Climate prediction just got some extra CPU time.

Apparently, the setting needed to be higher than 1.0 to get more WU's.

Unfortunately the 'Connect to network about every x days' is not a guarantee that you will have work for x days. For example, on one of my machines which crunches 3 wu's a day I only get 7 wu's in queue for a 5 days setting. The queue will only last for 2.5 days at most, if there are noisy wu's in the queue it will be a lot less. I'm told that this will be fixed in the upcoming boinc 5.*, but until then we will have to calculate ourselves how many wu's we will need per day and how many we will really get when we change our settings.

Greetings,
Sander
