I was just courious if all the different optimizers out there for the Seti@home project was really worth using? I tried one for about 5 mins and really didn't care too much for it. It was dos based and no visuals. Personally I like the visuals (I goto bed while watching them), but if the optimizers are really woth it and can gain more creds by using them, maybe i'll switch. Can anyone give me some more feedback on these?

DOS based???

No, there isn't a screensaver in the optimized builds as that wastes CPU cycles. The whole idea behind the optimized clients is to eek every bit of possible speed from your system.

I believe they are worth it, and of course you can gain more credits because you complete more work in a less amount of time.

The optimized Seti clients are better in my opinion. On my system, it shaved almost 2 hours off the processing time for a normal WU. Although the optimized Seti client reduces the credits per WU due to it processing the work faster, it can be made up over a short amount of time by the fact your crunching more WU's quicker.

Now if an optimized client could ever be done for Einstein and the 11 hour WU's I'd be real happy but I doubt that will happen.

The optimized version I'm running on my dual P3 700 (Tetsuji's optimized SETI app YAOSCW-K-r8.1.zip) reduced my average work unit time from around 12 hours to around 7 hours.

They aren't optimized... Just new.

In fact, most people report they take longer. It takes around 2000 seconds longer on my system. The graphics work again though on systems with ATI cards.

Well the optimized version I was running I found in the Overclockers Forum (Iadmit, I was snooping, I'm gulity). But like I said, when I started it, it launched my cmd and ran from there. I think it was working, but there wasn't anything there to inform me if it was. I could have just opened task manager to see if I was at 100% CPU usage, but didn't think of it at that time.

Anyhow, does anyone actually know where I can get a good optimized client? I don't really NEED the screen saver.

Ah, so you were just running the client by itself? You are supposed to just launch the BOINC manager just like you would with the standard client. It'll do the rest. (I'm assuming you didn't install as a service)

No, I didn't install it as a service. I'm running on my laptop atm until I finish building my new computer. So running as a service isn't too good for me considering my limitations.

I have an ATI card and I cannot get the screen saver to work. I treied the optimizer but I think i installed it wrong because now Im on my BOINC back up and cannot get the regular to work. Keeps saying connection failed. I tried reinstalling. No luck. Now I am worried that my credits will not accumulate while using the backed up BOINC i made when i tried the optimnizer. I need help...someone

Hey Jason!

Tell what steps you took when you installed it, we can help you out.

Little advice to anybody that wants to install it, set BOINC to no new work and send in all your work units before installing the optimized client.

Yup!

switching apps like this will thrash any WUs you have downloaded for the project. The only saving grace is that they fail immediatley on starting so little CPU time is wasted. Also, your client reprots a WU error to the server which means that at least the result gets resent without having to wait for 2 weeks for the deadline to pass.

cheers,

Paul.
