Could a staff member update the community regarding what's happening? Just a short note. We haven't heard for a few days and there seems to be some interesting changes in servers, loading, etc.

I back this request.

e.g.:
- No more WUs for older clients?
- All splitters down (15:15 UTC). Let's see how the "Ready to send" queue dwindles ;-)=

We LOVE news...

Cutting off the older clients might be newsworthy but the splitters being down is most certainly not. When the splitters reach the end of a tape, they go offline until a new tape is loaded. 15:15 UTC is early morning in California. The tape that was being split overnight most likely finished and no one had arrived to put in a new one. Sometimes I think the server status page is doing more harm than good. I like it but some people see one service go down and panic when it is simply a natural part of project maintenance.

I'll put up a "general status" tech note sometime soon. The splitters were off for "maintenance" (we're trying to let the assimilator catch up on a major backlog). Also note that I've starting an "unofficial" log (link in my .sig). This log contains more entertainment than anything, but may be of significant use for the news junkies who don't want to scour message boards or wait for tech news items to go through the editorial process.

Explain this as well, Matt, please.

That was your data server as of 18:05 UTC!

I just read your Slog, Matt. Can we use excerpts of this when another person is complaining? Can we use it in the Wiki?

Thx Matt!

Toby was right - these events are not worth mentionning, unless they are of serious matter... I just hapened to have a look into the Server status just before I read this thread. Sorry.

Also note that I've starting an "unofficial" log (link in my .sig)
- make it Matts Blog :-)=

Matt, I love the slog idea. thx.

Now if I could only understand why I only get 1d of cached results when I ask for 10d's worth, I would go back to my quiescent state.

1 day instead of 10? See my thread "BOINC overcommits itself" for a possible forthcoming answer.

Dead!

Is that a demand or a statement?

And what is that graph showing in any case? What is the data and what units?

Regardless, the question or demand is moot, Boinc is DESIGNED for a certain level of fault tolerance. The servers and links DO NOT have to be online every femtosecond 24/7/365.25!

Now, perhaps you can enquire in a better light?

Regards,
Martin

Message 143221 - Posted: 26 Jul 2005, 20:08:26 UTC

At the end of the day on Friday we discovered that all machines talking to the SnapAppliance over the Gigabit switch were happy, but the ones talking over the LAN were having chronic NFS dropouts.

Requesting at least one time of adding to the log what all the abbreviations are.
Now I am looking at NFS dropouts and thinking you're playing Need For Speed 3 to NFS: Underground 2 through those servers, with people dropping out...

There's this big white space to the right of the text (for me at least at 1024x768). Why not add a legend into it that holds most of the abbreviations with links to what they are?

Like I asked it for myself.

Then at least add it for anyone who has never touched a computer before in his life. Isn't it normal that the abbreviations get at least one full example in the text, before you start abbreviating them?

Well, I have this Wiki with most of the BOINC documentation, including an acronym list ... if it is not there... tell me and it will be ...

But then, that is "Tech News" and a certain technical familiarity must be assumed. As it is, for a 'Tech' news, it makes for very relaxed easy reading. The rest is up to you to try Google :)

NFS = Network File System, similar to the 'Windows file sharing' except that it has been in use for decades longer!

DNS = Domain Name Service (Lookup), a protocol to ask a server what the IP address is for "some.domain.name" for the internet.

Gigabit switch...

I'll let others fill in any other blanks! Welcome to the Techies!!

Good luck,
Martin

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I've very glad to see the exceptional commentary in the Technical News section.
Good job!

NFS = like Windows file sharing but it actually works
DNS = something local that is bulletproof, as soon as you contact your ISP things get a bit squirelly
Gigabit Switch = a network switch which gives a full Gigabit bandwidth to each connected port, and therefore has a backplane with bandwidth the size of Texas!

Any more?
