I know seti has been really busy with all the recent problems, but I was wondering if any progress had been made about the migration. Last we heard they were transfering classic seti tapes to a boinc seti format and it was difficult to estimate progress because each tape had a different amount of information.

Hi

Look here
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/transition.php

Account creation on classic is disabled.
Matt wrote that they are produceing not enough results to close classic yet.
But they are working on it.

I take it you mean not enough BOINC seti units to crunch to keep everyone happy. I am just curious as I think freeing up all the resources for BOINC SETI will make the job easier in the long run even if both classic and BOINC seti have to close down for a few weeks. We will survive if they do. After all, one purpose of BOINC is to have alternative projects for when one project temporairily shuts down. Thanks for the reply!

Ed & Harriett .. and Mike --

If one looks at the stats with respect to how many active users are doing SETI work, you find that BOINC based workers (SETI II) currently (July 24, 2005) number about 160,000, while SETIclassic workers number about about 300,000 (same date).

That being said, sometime down the road there is gonna be one tremendous increase in the demand for SETI II WorkUnits (WUs). I just hope there is enough room in SETI II for all of us ...

Did the bump in the road from last weekend not teach you anything? Look at all the whinning and complaining we had last weekend when people couldn't upload results. Just imagine what it would be like if they shut Seti/BOINC down ENTIRELY! people would riot. There would be destruction in the streets. World governments would be overthrown. The earth would be knocked off its axis and the sun would collapse into a black hole.

Now that would be fine for Einstein, it should give them their long awaited gravitational waves ;)

Please forgot einstein.
This project is most user unfriendly biggest difference in deadline and crunchtime.
In my opinion the only reason of long term debt.
I detached all machines on einstein.
They have only 50000 users and are not able to handle the server load.
I´m not negative normally but i tried many times to understand but i give up.

To each his own. I happen to like Einstein and enjoy crunching numbers for thier project.

And ET would finally show up to fix us?

Last time I checked (many years ago) classic seti was stuck at about 50,000 active users though they had many more total users. I thought you meant classic seti had 300,000 total users, but when I went to check classic seti just now, I was surprised they had 300,000 active users. WOW! I have already not taken any new work from BOINC seti until after the migration is complete and things are settled. The seti folks are great, but there may be no way to do this that will satisfy everyone. Closing down for two weeks (or whatever it would take) would result in much anguish and seti would open up again with many problems, BUT at least 100% of the resources could be focused on BOINC seti. Until we move to BOINC SETI I fear we are stuck and can't move on to any new projects such as sending the data from Arcibo by land line instead of mailing magnetic tapes or trying a new telescope.

Sometimes I think we are alone in the universe, and sometimes I think we are not. In either case the idea is quite staggering.

Seti Classic has a lot of duplication of work to kee people bush (happy). A lot of crunchers on S@H classic are just crunching to build their total wu total for bragging rights.

I'm a cheerleader! Just looking at my sig I see that I've done a lot of work for 1) the search for ET; 2) predicting climate change; 3) something to do with gravity; 4) protiens doing stuff; and 5) the biggest particle accelerator in the world!

I get a great sense of satisfaction knowing that I can help science with my motley crew of new and old computer boxes!

As I said a couple of weeks ago, SetiAtHome was only supposed to last 2 years. It is now going on 6 years and has evolved into BOINC which is a much better use of the Internet than stealing music. These people can be proud of what they have done for their science and the whole world. I for one am content to let them run it and just tell me what I can do to help. The most important resource for good leaders to have is good followers.

Keep it up!!
