Hi there.

So, it looks like all the optimized clients are back at version 4.11, while the main seti client is up to 4.18.

Is it really ok, or valid, to run an old client?

Perhaps the fixes from 4.11 to 4.18 are worth more than mere optimization...??

Thanks,
Don

No m8. The only difference between an optimized 4.11 and a normal 4.18, is the graphics thingy. The math is EXACTLY the same

But aren't folks saying that versions prior to 4.13 are responsible for many extra "client error download failures"?

Or is that a BOINC version issue?

Thanks again!

Plz remember that we are talking about the CRUNCHERS, and not the CC. The CC BELOW 4.19 are likely to produce upload errors.

Don,

There are two version numbers. one for the BOINC Client Software, and one for each and every Science Application. The SETI@Home version is 4.18 and everyone runs that or an "optimized" version which will have its own "unique" number.

THe BOINC Client Software also has a version number. The recommended version for that is 4.45 ... and it does work well for most people. But it is not perfect and works differently than the older versions. So, some participants are happier running earlier versions ... some as old as the 4.13 ... which is a cause of several problems, the least of which is a tendency to not download work correctly.

So, we are hoping that the next major upgrade will restrict downloads to these really ancient versions. And if we are real lucky (Paul's opinion here) they will not allow the BOINC Client Software to be lower in version than 4.45 ... and many of the problems we have will be reduced ... again ... Paul's Opinion ...

Exactly. The Boinc client is handling all up- and download issues for your workunits, as well as scheduling multiple projects on your computer. The recommended version at this time is 4.45

The official Seti client at the moment is 4.18, the optimized 4.11 is fully compatible with 4.18.

Greetings,
Speedy67

Just to emphasize the fact that the science (eg. math) is the same for long time now: the version of official SETI/BOINC science application for linux is still at 4.02.

And if I'm not mistaken, the very same sources at given time when compiled for linux yielded in version 4.07 while compiled for windows yielded in 4.11.

Thanks every one.

One last question, what is "CC", (and not the c compiler!), refered to above?
Is this an acronym for the boinc app?

CC = Core Client = BOINC
CCR = Credance Clearwater Revival, has nothing to do with BOINC

Yes, it stands for BOINC Core Client.
[edit] I'm getting to old (slow) for this ... ;)

Yes, CC is Core Client - or the boinc app to you and me :)

Ned

Edit - Thanks Ulrich - you beat me to it :)
