Boy, let S@H hit a small bump in the road to a great concept and you would think the world is coming to an end. As I recall, a lot of people told the Wright brothers that their contraption would never fly.

There are toooooo many with nothing but time on their hands and are spoiled by the instant gratification of information. They have to know everything NOW. And rude.

They are bitching now, just wait until in influx of Classic users. "What do you mean I have to wait to get a WU, I guess my CPU cycles are not goot enough for this project." I am real tired of the "Cheerleader" reference to people that are trying to help.

I think you said it best when you said "a small bump in the road". This is a learning experience. It is a work in progress.

I guess I'd better get my cheerleader shirt, short skirt, and my pom-poms.

You all know that all those "animated things" that you embed in the Forum eats CPU cycles of the Stressed Servers with network connections... Or eats your CPU cycles that could be doing BOINC... It creates "network threads/child processes" in an environment that is overloaded thus the dropped conections... The Stats image that you link in causes even more connections to have your bragging rights display... It is a complicated, interconnected world... It will get worse as the Classic users migrate...

Ooops no one ever told you that... or why to be careful about anything other than "text" Oh some of the information that is served from the servers and internet connections may or may not impact on why you can or can not upload/download... a portion is that the have multiple processes running on "common" machines that are all impacted by silly stuff like "vanity"...

I guess that is a "Good Wine".... LOL

Alright, I am willing to step up and explain the reasons for my criticisms.

Call it what you will, I believe I have a serious beef with the SETI project.

I volunteer my computers. I have spent quite a bit of money on them and, by my estimate, about $1,000 a year in donations of electricity. I feel I have a vested interest in what happens to this project.

BOINC and the SETI project were developed at Berkeley. It stands to reason that as the pioneers of this type of DC they should be the experts. As someone who has been in BOINC for about a year now I have seen that there have been more than a "few hiccups" and wonder why the other BOINC projects seem to run a bit smoother (I am not talking about the granting of credit) when it comes to project stability.

Berkeley has been at the forefront of computing for a LONG TIME. It stands to reason that they should be able to deal with the unique demands of the SETI project, but as I stated in "Upload I" it seems we are finding it takes longer to catch up with shorter outages. Making excuses on their behalf does not help generate a solution and trashing the critics does even less. Just because this project is non-profit/volunteer does not mean there should not be coherent planning, sound decision making, and use of best practices. Budget constraints are a single variable that should not dictate how the entire project is managed.

I am glad to see that some "new" hardware is going to be employed to deal with the load. I think it is part because some of us HAVE complained that some real action has taken place.

Nope, the fora and other web pages don't go over the same connection as the science. They go through a smallband (at least in proportion ;) access via UCB, the science has a direct broadband link to the outer world through Cogent.
That's why they are still usable without problems. (But it would not help to switch, as I've been told with the Cogent outage last time, too much effort for too little use.)

As far as generating solutions, making excuses for the people that quite literally whine when the project has problems and trashing the people working on the project doesn't help either to solve the problems yet it happens here every time there is a problem. Constructive criticism is one thing and I have no problem with constructive criticism but many people come here to just complain. Call me a cheerleader if you will but I can't see the purpose of making a temper tantrum post because the project is down or having problems yet every time there's a problem, we see many of the whining type posts with little constructive value to the project.

Budget constraints unfortunately are a very important variable in how projects are managed, especially in education. While I agree with your points about planning, decision making and use of the best practices, the budget still has the ultimate say in if something can be done and when, especially when those points you made require money to be spent in order to be achieved. If the money isn't there, it isn't there.

Just my 2 coppers...

OK, how many other projects are you on? CPDN is still having issues with credits, and has had a lot more upload and download problems then I've seen here. Just because you do not see the amount of whining about those projects doesn't mean they are running well. In fact Seti gives more information than the other projects, so there is more for you to whine about.

Yes, it's a pioneer. So it must test things and make them work, so the other projects can work more smoothly. Come on, think about what you said. They are doing a lot of work to make it right. If the other projects have less issues, it's because Berkeley did their job.

You think you could do better, go make a new DC, and see how easy it is.

There seems to have been an oopsy at the cleaners. Something about a thermostat saying 40 but meaning 90. What size were you again? I doubt it'll fit any longer. :(

Morning, I think people should be thankful for what they have, and that is downloads. I predict that when they have to remove the server to replace it that U/L and D/L will be dead, and that a whole new round of whining will start because they can't Download. Atleast they can download now. Just watch, they'll be bitching about the complete outage to come.

Don't forget having to wait for that 1.67 million units to be uploaded once things are working again. By that time it'll probably be around 1.8 million units. So even with something fresh online, the backlog will still have to clear. More whining.
