Hello Berkeley! It's now after noon on Monday in California, and the last news we heard about the slowdown was from the front page, "July 15, 2005: The data server is continuing to drop connections, which is very unusual this long after an outage. We are working to figure out why." Now, I didn't expect you to work on this over the weekend, but I'm sure you have examined it today. Based on the interest shown on the message boards, there are lots of folks who would like to hear what's what.

i'd rather their time be spent on diagnosing/repairing the problem than on arguing with us about what it is and how it could have been avoided. Matt usually pokes his head in the forums with plenty of info when they have issues under control. if they aren't under control, then theres no reason to be chatting with us users who still have plenty of seti work

A one sentence message on the front page would be enough. You may have thought I wanted to start a discussion here, but that's not what I'm asking. Look at the threads (I know you have already) discussing this bottleneck--whatever it's cause--and the frustration of participants. A little news is just common sense and won't take the developers away from their work for too long.

We have been trough this a couple of weeks ago after a rather long outage. Check this forum for the thread. I took from these threads, that the folks in Berkeley would change their information policy to a more user-friendly one. But nothing.
Frankly, we do not even know they showed up for work this morning. Perhaps they are tied up in a campus-wide meeting or out for fund raising. We just don't know. We are speculating and that is frustating.
It's is 2p.m., if I did the time zone conversion right, and not a single word from the people at the lab. It is called being polite.

We have been trough this a couple of weeks ago after a rather long outage.

this isn't an outage. in an outage, it helps us to know when servers might come back online to plan accordingly. if we know how long it might be, a user can use it to upgrade hardware, or upgrade boinc/seti software, or tweak performance settings, or schedule when to come home to hammer the servers for fresh work, or just shut down completely and save power for a few days. it's also nice to know that the staff is aware of the problem and are working to resolve it.

they already acknowledged that they are aware of the upload situation, nothing else affects us. what does more information here do for you? nothing. we all have work, the results will eventually be uploaded and credited, and very few people are getting close to return deadlines.

Why do you think it's so hard for the developers to do the right thing for those of us who want to know what's going on (apparently not you, and that's fine)? A one sentence news item on the front page . . . that would be enough. If you don't want to know what's going on, why do you keep posting comments that try to make my desire to know sound like such a bad thing? What did I do to bother you?

Where did you get that information? Who is it from? I've checked the Front Page and Technical news, and I've read lots of posts here in number Crunching but I have not seen that.

First of all, we have a conversation in English, which is obviously not my native language. So please don't take my postings apart word by word. My vocabular is somewhat limited. Just imagine the forum language would be German. You are very welcome then to have the same discussion in German. Okay? Please try to get the meaning of the postings.

Back to the topic:
I complain about the fact that even when the forum is full of threads discussing the current situation nobody in the Lab give out the tiniest bit of information, even now, when it is mid-afternoon in California. And this is not good. I don't know , why. But they depend on us volunteers. We do it for fun, but they do it to earn their living, at least some of them. The project would collapse without the crunching power of the users. Or do you think, they could also raise the money to buy 200k+ computers and replace the users. I doubt it for several reasons.

Speak for yourself - some of us have remote PC's that are now being starved of WU's as the completed WU's aren't being uploaded at all and no new WU's are being downloaded...!

PS Did anyone check the transitioner - now up to 6 hours !! (Was 2 hours earlier today).

Timbo

Am just glad I'm attached to other projects, so I can switch them over, having suspended SETI (hoping to reduce the network congestion - or am I just allowing others to grab WU's that should be coming my way !)

regards,
Tim

Blank Reg,
I just read this same line that you wrote in the thread called "This is NOT fun anymore", but there you start the post by saying it is from the "devs". Are you in contact with the developers? Are you a developer? If either if these things is true, then please use your influence to put some information on the Front Page for the rest of us slobs!
