First let me state for the record that I have always been one of the despised cheerleaders. I run boinc/seti on several machines as a hobby and for the fun of it. This is not fun anymore!! Watching my machines download sometimes and constantly failing on the uploads has ceased to be fun anymore. This is not fun anymore!! Watching the upload que growing by the hour and failing is not fun anymore!!. I don’t know the reasons and don’t claim to know. All I know is that it is broken and has been broken for some time now. This is not fun anymore!! As per usual there is little to no information coming from the developers who seem to delight in keeping the volunteer crunchers in the dark. I mean how long does it take to add another paragraph to the front page? The last update was 2 days ago! Can’t anybody spare those few minutes even on a weekend? This is not fun anymore!! I’ll say it again This is not fun anymore!! DOES ANY DEVELOPER KNOW WHY?? ANY DEVELOPER CARE ENOUGH TO RESPOND WITH A QUICK NOTE TO US LOW LIFE VOLUNTEER CRUNCHERS?? Maybe I should just quit watching the machines and get a life. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

Maybe I should just quit watching the machines and get a life. There's the key. I peek at my transfer list (now at 5 SETI and 1 SETIBeta, there's been some successes to offset the new units). Then, leave it alone while I go do other things... Spent the afternoon and evening with a musical theater company, selling tickets, watching the show, tearing down the set and moving it out. Away from the computer! My suggestion, monitor it, sure, but get a life! Find something fun to do! Let the developers have a weekend, and a life, and do things that are fun! When they get back on Monday morning, they'll be looking at the problem, and eventually fix it. The work will get uploaded. Credit will be applied (or not). Progress will be made. Chill out! (and if you do, would you send some of that chill up here? The humidity is killing me! 8-) |

This is not fun anymore!! This is not fun anymore!! is not fun anymore!! This is not fun anymore!! This is not fun anymore!! I’ll say it again This is not fun anymore!! You seem to keep repeating yourself. Contrary to you, the developers do have a life. They don't work on the weekend. Red Bull Air Racing Gas price by zip at Seti |

I haven't heard a peep from the devs this weekend either. I have recieved Emails from Dr. Anderson after 8 PM PST, and I have on Several weekends seen Emails from Rom Walton on Weekends. One was even after 10 PM PST on Sunday. So, they do work some weekends (however, Rom is probably 800 miles from the lab). |

I second the "stop worrying and it'll work itself out" approach. There are plenty of BOINC projects that need crunching time and SETI will come around eventually. After all, we've been waiting 10,000+ years to make contact with other planets, another day or two won't kill anyone. David Thompson, Intellectual Property Law Stanford Law and Policy Society |

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Got my mind back on the right track now. As you say and as I already know, things will work out, credit will arrive whenever, like always. But wow...this has been going on for what...5 or 6 days now...but I digress. It is much my own fault since I only run Seti. It's the only project that really interests me. I will be really happy when PlanetQuest comes online. Anyway thanks again. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

There is actually a note on the main page that states there is a problem, that they knew Friday, and they are working on fixing it. The uploads are mostly the problem. Uploads happen, but the packets are getting dropped, and they are currently unsure why. The notices was done late Friday, and with a weekend it will take them time to fix. Hope you do not leave. Seti is awesome. Some of us are glad to be here, even with the problems that have happened. I am happily crunching Seti data, and have several to send back, when it becomes fixed. Now remember, when it does get fixed, the systems will be bogged down with everyone finally trying to get their data in, so it could still take a couple days to finally clean up. It was a warm Sunday here, maybe a little heat got under the collar, and just made a little rage fly? I hope that's all it was. Keep smiling. It makes your enemies wonder what you are thinking! Geek@Play Since you appear to be like myself and micro-manage boinc. Just sit there and keep hitting the update or retry button, that's what I did just after I attached a second computer and I was able to get some new work. It did take a while, but then what else was I supposed to do on a Saturday night, sort my sock drawer? hehehehe ;) Live long and crunch. Paul (S@H1 8888) And proud of it! |

It seems that all of us know that the guys at the seti lab suffer from both hardware and software problems. I would be interested to know what the ideal solution would be to help solve the hardware problems (ie. We need this, this and this so that everything functions the way it should) since most of the software problems can only be fixed by them. Could some one from seti give us an idea of what we could do to help (Please, not with the easy answer: $$$)? Crunching is as fun as you make it. Mike IAS - Where Space Is Golden! |

WOW...glad I got that off my chest. Computers are still busted though! A suggestion for a Sunday night: go read Frank Drake's book. In it he says that SETI should never be your primary focus. You'll go nuts if it is, because you probably won't find ET and in the meantime life will pass you by. So if you do SETI, then do it as a piggyback on other "serious" radio astronomy so you can at least be publishing papers every now and then. Hint: This Is Also Why S@H Was Designed As A Background Process. Think about it: You do other stuff, and your computer searches for ET in the background. Fun? Yes, so long as it stays in the background... Hope that helps. Tony |

Ahh it is fun at least most of the time. I am a small timer and only have 1 and half computers silently chuning over the numbers in the background, but have been doing this for 5 or 6 years, and all I want from it is to beat my team mates, (and of course to have Rashaverak or 1 of the other Overlords {Childhood's End} come a knocking on my door, Arthur C Clarke hooked me into Sci-Fi). I don't really care if they take a day or a week to solve the problems, I know that I have heaps of disk space to store the results. But this break has lead me to discover the Einstein program, and they have a way better sceen saver. And david is quite correct when he says; "After all, we've been waiting 10,000+ years to make contact with other planets, another day or two won't kill anyone." A simple country boy waiting for... A sign of any kind. |

Shut down Seti Classic & then all that hardware will be available for Seti BOINC to use. BUT.... During the transition all the SETI Classic users will overload the SETI Boinc systems! |

Hoi Pohh Bear, You say the words and I'm fully agree with it, hope that more people will read it and indeed will keep smiling, after all, it was very warm last sunday. Keep on crunching and the upload problem will be solved anyhow. Greetz, Browny |
