seems from the postings and personal experience that SETI (and possbily the other distributed computing projects that use BOINC) do not want Macs to help -
as the BOINC client seems to be a piece of garbage.

it does not instal correectly (my experience)
it does not seem to invoke the graphics as it is supposed to
it does not seem to return data after analysis
it does not seem to get raw data

given the above - what good is it??

Boinc may not install like other Mac apps. and it takes a little configuring. Then the problems with the "work units" uploads and downloads, but... things are getting better. Boinc with seti 4.18 now has both a graphic that shows the "wu" thats running, and a banner screen-saver that you can run. 10.3.9 or above is needed for it to run. I have three Mac's running, and except for the time the sever was down, things have been going smoothly. I do agree that installing boinc could be made easier, and maybe with some input from us Mac users, updates will improve it. I ran Seti classic back sometime ago, and as with all changes, with boinc/seti there will be growing pains.

take a loo kat my other posting -
BOINC does NOT install - it hangs the OS

only one other app has done anything nearly as bad since I started using OX (10.1)
that was IE - it immediately kernel paniced the OS

summary of other post - BOINC causes the finder (and any other running app) to hang - it refuses to respond to key or mouse input - including trying to force quit.

the only resolution was removal

The symptoms of a frosen system (pre OS X-style), actually sounds more like you have a bad RAM-chip. I experienced the same problem with a brand new 17" PowerBook 1.67 Ghz. After some testing it appeared as if there was certain apps causing the lock-ups. But after changing a dealer-installed RAM-chip I'ts been working flawlessly ever since.

Just a thought...

I have had the same issues. It's not a bad Ram Stick. There is a issue with Boinc even if they don't want to admit it. If your only project is Seti@home you can down load a better version of bonic from here:

http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc.html cut and paste

Also on the bottom of this page is a faster Set@home client. But if are running the Einstein .02 project the Boinc 4.44 has all kinds of issues. Which are being worked one.

If you need any more help let me know.

NOT a RAM chip -
BOINC is the **ONLY** app that causes a problem.

The machine has been working (dual G5 2.5ghz) since I received it - October-ish last year.

IE kernal paniced my dual G4 when I first got it - about 2000(?)
----------

The problem with the locked computer was *CAUSED* by BOINC; as removal of the BOINC software (manually) allows the computer to fucntion normally

This infomormation was included inthe original posting.

>There is a issue with Boinc even if they don't want to admit it.
this is the problem -
they either
1 - dont care if any Mac client helps [my guess]
2 - do care, but are incompetent and can not make the software run correctly
3 - dont care about any platform's client

in any of the choices above - they have had plenty of time to resolve these issues and have not.
The original Seti client, while it may have had a few issues, these issues were resolved quickly and at least in my experience - 50,000 work units turned in - the problems were NOT OS crippling.

So....as I said before....

I guess SETi (and any other distributed computing project) using BOINC does not want the help of Mac clients
