I tried to download and install the optimized boinc seti at home client that is offered for download by Team MacNN. I found the link on the official seti download page.

Here is the link:
http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc.html

There are optimized versions for G3/G4/G5 and also versions compiled for the older 10.2.x.

Using a G4 Power Book I tried to download the according *.gz package for my 10.3.x system.
It downloaded but gives me an error when I try to unpack it with the StuffIt expander. BTW I tried the command line as well no success.

I downloaded different packages, the only one that unpacks correctly is the version for G5 under OS 10.3.x. Which I cannot use... :-(

Anybody else tried the MacNN versions?
Any sucess?

Your feedback is appreciated!

Hi Chris,

I'm running the Jaguar 10.2.8 version on my G4 fine. I will download the files and try to unstuff to see if it works here. I'll come back to you asap.

Best regards
Marc

Ok I've just downloaded the file with both SAFARI and IE. When dowloaded with SAFARI it comes already unstuffed so the file is ready to use. When doawnloaded with IE it lauch stuffit expander and unstuff the file without any problem.

You might consider trying with SAFARI or update Sttuffit expander. I am running version 7.

Good luck

Best regards
Marc

Hello Marc

You are right using Safari instead of Firefox did the trick...
I do not understand why but it works. :-)

The only thing I see now is, that I still have to use the original compiled seti_boinc client. There is only a special Seti client for the G5.

I would like to see if an optimized compile of the seti client brings an advantage in calculation time...

At least I can run now the newest boinc version optimized for the G4...

Thanks again!

Glad I could help

I don't know. Some say yes some same no. I am not a programmer but apparently it has something to do debugging code. I have read in other thread that the official release do not contains debug so it should be of same speed. It's just a guess as I'm not in my predilection domain here.

Best regards

So, how much of a performance improvement has anyone here noticed on a G5? Just FYI, the one I donwloaded here was 4+ MB more than the one from team MacNN but I don't know about any possible speed increase yet.
