I've been running Seti@home since 1999. I've notice that recently some times it take over 13 hours to process one unit, Other times it takes around 3 hours. I'm running a Pentium 4 @2.6ghz. I let it run during the night when nothing is running in the background. So why does it take so long now?

There are two possibilities:

1) Your PC cooling isn't working properly - either you have broken fans or you need to remove dust from the inside of your PC. Either will cause the CPU to overheat and slow down to protect itself.

2) Your PC has some other software running which is getting in the way of SETI@home - either something you've installed, or something that shouldn't be there (spyware/virus).

Either of these should be fairly easy to spot - visually in the first case, or by running task manager for the second.

Are you only running BOINC SETI? Or another project as well for backup?

I ask only because there is still a problem with 4.43 and presumably 4.45 where a unit is instructed to "pause" and doesn't - leading to increased run times as the percentage of CPU is reduced for the "running" unit.

I have seen this still happening, both BOINC manager and BOINCView don't pick it up - I am watching BOINCView now incrementing percentage done and time spent on a unit which clearly says "paused".

I'm almost sure he didn't mean BOINC, but Classic. Seeing how he doesn't have one Seti/Boinc unit at this moment... Plus he's telling in other forums that he's running Seti Classic.
