Message 9215 - Posted: 18 Jul 2004, 2:37:26 UTC

btw. did anyone of you ever think about traffic costs ? Guido (well..not only him) hotlinks many pictures from other servers here. He "steals" traffic from other sites without permission. You know that many websites have traffic-limits and therefore you should download a pic and put it on your server and then post it here...but he just link it from their servers. Maybe someone should do the same thing with pictures from his website...I would like to see his face if he get's the traffic bill...

It's all a question of netiquette...

In the strictest sense of netiquette, that's the only valid point anyone has posted against this. But, your post leaves the reader with the impression that it's some huge cost associated with this, and that's not the case.

Guido in particular usually posts only very small pictures (maybe not in physical size on your screen, but the files are very small). Look through some of them and you will see they usually run somewhere in the 20K range. Now assuming the host site for the image is fully over their bandwidth and every load of it here is costing them...just how much does it actually cost them?

The going rate for excess bandwidth is about $5 per Gig. In this forum, only 2 threads have ever had more than 2000 views, and the overwhelming majority only have a few hundred views. If you do the math, you will see that worst case scenario we're still talking CENTS, never even anywhere near a full dollar.

So yes, technically it's a transgression, but the severity (or lack thereof) of the transgression shouldn't be ignored.

yes it is.

==> while scrolling, some of the posted pictures wanted
to install some cookies, I don't like this much.

==> they are wasting also the PCs tempoary internet files...

Darren, in your last posting you used 1302 chars.
the nacked needed space (anywhere it resides) is a little bit more than
1 kilobyte (1302 bytes just talking non formatted text)

your small picture you use is small, nice to view and informative.

when I saved your stats.png for checking the space needed 21'635 KB (!) and not the smalest but a small one.
Well, I know talking in kilobytes it's the same as talking cents.

Lets more have a look to this, if a threat starts with many pictures,
the user has more to scroll to scroll or has more to adjust the sorting or have something more to do, until finding what he is looking for.
That, uses (wastes?) our all time. may be I'm lonely with this view.

> > It's all a question of netiquette...
several points of views, all have the equal rights to exist

guesting arround to other non boinc-forums, they also uses signatures,
many has a picture attached to the userprofile, but in the posting
themself there are Text (some of them like smilies)

greetings

ric

Hello Byron,

Thanks for all your kind words, most of which I probably don't really deserve. But I do always make an effort to do the right thing, so I just call them like I see them.

Take care,

Darren

Vielen Dank.

Claw. Stop. Take a breath. You have taken this TOO far. I like the pictures. There are others who do. So suck it up and don't attack other users. We are all here to process SETI data, not to fight and bicker over something so stupid and pointless as someone trying to enjoy themselves a little and bring a little laugh or thought to other users. There is no harm in that. But cursing at other users and flat out attacking them as such, that is low and incredibly immature. If you are so sensitive about a few pictures being on a web page, then perhaps the internet is the wrong place for you. Perhaps message boards are the wrong place for you. I don't like telling someone they shouldn't even look through the message boards, because I think that most people will probably at some time or another be able to help others, and most will have a question sometime, but if you can't be civil then perhaps thats the way it should be.

Now, here's a novel idea for everyone, stop bickering about Guido's pictures and turning an abandoned anthill into borg planet, and perhaps then, we can get back to real problems and the real reason we are all here, to help in one of the largest and greatest scientific research projects of all time.

The only thing that seems a bit over the top to me are the empty posts, especially sequential emtpy posts. If one doesn't work for some reason, he really needs to edit the post rather than just creating a new one. That aside, I like that Guido does what he does because it is different. It is a change of pace. But that does not mean people should just copy what he does. That would be annoying and it wouldn't be different anymore. Sure it's weird, but hey, we're all using our computers to process data to try to find ET. I'm sure there are a lot of people who think every one of us are weird for doing that. I'm sure a lot of people think it's stupid, pointless, and a waste of energy and resources. But we do it anyway. So we are all a little weird, but even the weird group needs that one weird person to kind of keep things interesting and keep everyone on their toes so to speak.

And for those of you who think that people "like Guido" shouldn't be able to post pictures, your signatures would be gone if they blocked the code that allowed pictures to be in the signatures. And even if it were possible to block larger pictures (which it is not because as it has been said MANY times, the pictures are NOT on UCB's servers) again, most of his pictures are smaller than the signatures used by many of the users here. For those of you who think his "500+" pictures are pointless, Darren has already pointed out (before many of you even made this claim) that most (not all) of his posts have a message to them, albeit some of them you do actually have to use your brain to understand. Second, just to be picky, I think when I looked last Guido was getting close to 500 posts total, and NOT all of them contained any pictures at all, and some of them only contained a signature, and only a few here and there had multiple pictures. So in reality, he there are probably not over 500 pictures. If they are, then I stand corrected.

Darren, I like all of your posts (at least in this thread, and am in complete agreement. There is another thing that causes some threads to take a long time to download and even cause a delay on cable modems, and that is the insessent bickering that drive threads up to .. well however long this thread is now. And the horrible thing about it is, there has only been one somewhat valid complaint throughout the entire thing.

We all should be intelligent enough not to even HAVE to discuss this issue. It shouldn't even be an issue. Laisez faire. Enjoy and be peaceful. Griping gets ya nowhere. :)

Chris
