I had Windows XP SP2 on my Athlon XP 2200+ processor computer but now Windows XP messed up and I've lost all my data, I decided to change back to Windows 2000 (more stable) instead of bad Windows XP SP2. Now, more to the point I'm trying to merge the old Windows XP SP2 computer number (891511) into the new computer number (1133267) but when I go on more details for the old computer number (when logged in), gone to the bottom where it says "merge this computer" clicked on it then, it displayed a list with nothing in it, I assume this is because you can only merge computers with the same operating system and same processor, so I think that the "merge this computer" link is only to merge P4 HyperThreaded processor computers, to turn the two virtual threads into one computer. Sorry I wrote so much I got a bit carried away! -Thomas@ATHLON- |

I had Windows XP SP2 on my Athlon XP 2200+ processor computer but now Windows XP messed up and I've lost all my data, I decided to change back to Windows 2000 (more stable) instead of bad Windows XP SP2. Sorry you've had problems with XPsp2, my own personal experiences with it have usually been rewarding, i.e. very stable, and forgiving, on a wide range of computers, but, win2k is good though isn't it, just a shame that it needs so many patches/upgrades/service packs to work correctly with modern hardware (i.e. USB 2). Now, more to the point I'm trying to merge the old Windows XP SP2 computer number (891511) into the new computer number (1133267) but when I go on more details for the old computer number (when logged in), gone to the bottom where it says "merge this computer" clicked on it then, it displayed a list with nothing in it, I assume this is because you can only merge computers with the same operating system and same processor You can actually merge any of your boxes that are deemed to be 'similar' enough, unfortunately, changing the OS on a box, makes it too dissimilar, so the merge facilities are unavailable. so I think that the "merge this computer" link is only to merge P4 HyperThreaded processor computers, to turn the two virtual threads into one computer. AFAIK, a hyperthreaded and/or dual core computer will show on your computer list as only one machine. Don't worry to much about merging the machines, when the computer that represents the XP install has had all its results validated, and the results are then taken off its results list for long term storage (you'll still keep the credits!), you can just delete that computer. You can actually merge any of your boxes that are deemed to be 'similar' enough, unfortunately, changing the OS on a box, makes it too dissimilar, so the merge facilities are unavailable. The description needs to be the same. In OS, in CPU, in memory, in Service Pack used. Else a new host ID for the computer will be made which you cannot merge with the old one. So a Windows XP SP1 computer updated to SP2 will get a new host ID that you cannot merge. More problematic is the way that CPUs are named these days. In old Boinc versions, I would have an Intel Celeron 2.3GHz Pentium CPU. Now I have a GenuineIntel Celeron 2.3GHz CPU, which I cannot merge with the old, as the CPU'd name has changed. What you can do however is wait long enough for the old name of the same PC to have gotten all of its units validated, removed, otherwise purged so your list is empty. At that point you can delete the old host. You credits will always stay with you. |

Thanks for the reply, I didn't know nothing about a "long term storage" area. Yea and Win2k is pretty good, that reminds me when will microsoft be phasing out win2k??? -Thomas@ATHLON- |

p.s. I mean when will they stop making updates? July 1 2005 is the official end of W2K support. However, security releases will continue for a while. BOINC WIKI |

M$ also said they stopped supporting win98 long ago but I still get security updates and patches from them. :) 98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8 And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer. |

July 1 2005 is the official end of W2K support. However, security releases will continue for a while. I hope they continue until Longhorn is out and stable. XP is not officially supported on this box because Dell and Intel won't update the BIOS to support it and I just want to buy a PC that's going to run the current and supported OS from Microsoft for more than a year. Can you tell I'm not happy with the way Microsoft forces users to upgrade hardware and software? I like my new toys just as much as the next guy, but I want to chose what are my "toys" and what are my "tools" and a PC is a "tool" for me. If I have to keep spending money on new "tools" there's not enough left over for the "toys" in want. Help and BOINC documentation is available here. |

I've looked around my user area and cannot find any util to delete hosts. Your Account-> View Computers. Then select the computer you want. It should be at the bottom of the page. IIRC, You only get the delete option _if_ that host can be deleted - i.e. has no pending work. |

I have 2 "computers" - it's the same but different SP's, OC different, name different from older versions of boinc - that I cannot delete yet. And are at least 1 yr old... with 1 and 2 bad connections left in the list of units. It's a crappy thing, so I wish you luck! http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=78666 http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=133132 |
