I've got ADSL and am thinking of turning my PC off when I'm not using it - the waste of elecricity is frustrating as my PC sits there doing nothing.

The only reason I upgraded my PC and moved to ADSL was for the SETI project...

I got the shits and had a whinge direct to the computing department at Berkley - it's their reputation as a world leader in IT that's at stake.

Everyone who is not getting the work units they want should write direct to berkley and we'll see how long it takes to have the proper resources associated with the project.

BOINC is a piece of f***ing garbage.

Uninstalled it, reinstalled the ORIGINAL SETI@Home client and it INSTANTLY started downloading WU and started processing.

DELETE this piece of crap off of your machine and get the original SETI@Home client and start helping SETI instead of WASTING YOUR TIME with some piece of garbage software that doesn't even work!!!!!!

Here's a thought.....

Uninstall BOINC and find a different project to work on. Perhaps you should try projects at Find-A-Drug.org. After they find the cure for cancer, I hear they will be looking for the next generation of Viagra. I can only imagine what THAT screensaver must look like!

Well, CG, if you'd read more than JUST my last post, you'd see that I not only uninstalled it, but reinstalled the original SETI client AND recommended others do it as well.

Maybe when you guys get serious about the SETI project then you will use serious language to describe your feelings towards something which HINDERS the SETI cause rather than helping.

Have fun WAITING on your WU's.

Or download the original SETI@Home client today

How many of you have actually written a single piece of software? I am a computer programmer and understand that the way you design a piece of software is not how it turns out in the end. The classic seti took a few months to get all the bugs worked out too. Software on this scale takes a while to work out all the bugs and get every single possible scenario worked out.

On another note, donated equipment is usually not the best kind out there and when a glich happens, the splitters and other computers have to play catch-up and with x amount of hardware and y amount of band with its kinda hard to immediately get up to speed.

I've been a developer for 13 years. I know the software development cycle very well. This piece of software is *barely* beta quality and should NOT have been released yet, plain and simple.

Well, I'm down to one computer (out of three) due to no work units. If I run out of work on this last computer, I'm going to pull the Seti plug for good.

The people at Seti don't seem to care or they would post more information. With a single phone line and a dial-up connect, I'm expected to connect three computers every hour or so until there's WU's available?

No where does it say this is beta software still under construction.

Why should I "expect" improvments?

JAF, please don't let this discourage you from the SETI project as a whole. Try the original SETI client. It's a better program AND there are tons of add-ons for it as well. Check out the pstats add-on @ my site http://www.brainsmashr.com/pstats.php

i do agree with you with the program being barely beta. I was also a beta tester of this software before it went public and they did not post on the beta website until after a few days that it went public. I think they miscalculated how many people would jump on over when it went public and that is what is causing most of the errors, but it is bringing out the bugs in the software and they will get taken care of in due time.

It's not (or shouldn't be!) gimpy "donated equpment". Sun and HP are "Key Sponsors", and the NSF is funding the effort.

"BOINC is supported by the National Science Foundation through award SCI/0221529."

>I think they miscalculated how many people would jump on over when it went public.

As of a couple days back, there were 21300 users on "live" with 1 or more credits. (and I'm sure some have gotten fed up and left). And it's not that a bunch of "big farms" moved to Seti/Boinc.. I crunch Seti/Boinc when I can on two average PCs, part time, and stay in the top 3000!

Beta has ~20000 registered users

Classic has about 200,000 active users (1 WU in the last 30 days)

They didn't "miscalculate". That would imply that they tried to "calculate"! (10% of the active users, and .04% of the registered users in classic is what's "switched over"!)

Why doesn't Predictor, with 6000 active users seem to have anywhere near the "hick-ups" that happen with "New Seti"? They "calculated!"!

Ok, I'm criticizing the linux software because it's much slower than the windows one but this is not my main point of critics. The main point is the plan behind the new project. It should have been clear that after announcing the new project on the website there will be lots of people come and try it. And in my opinion this software isn't even beta, it's more like alpha, so it was much too early to make the whole bunch of users swap to the new one. At the main page there was also the hint that the clasic seti will shut down sometime. This brings pressure to a lot of people to switch which leads to overcrowding of the new servers.

No, normally you should have chosen some way of smooth change to the new seti or maybe some kind of way how to connect them or mix them so you could also use the classic servers for balancing the pressure. Now it seems as if the classic has all the resources and the new one has not enough power to stand the pressure.

That's what I'm critizing: it looks like there is almost no plan, I can only see chaos which is getting bigger.

Udo

I really do dislike this selective knowledge thing some people have going on here. In a number of posts I have attempted to provide numbers that explain the load differences between the projects and yet somehow I still see this comparison between Beta and Public being made against number of consumers.

Let us see here, the beta project when computing all out was only sending out 20,000-30,000 results a day. Now we are sending out 600,000 results a day for the public project.

Now for some perspective here, since we are being compared to SAH v1's 137,000 WU's processed a day, now lets compare that to this projects 200,000 WU's processed a day before things became unbalanced.

The really beefy hardware is still allocated to the SAH v1 project. We won’t be able to move SETI BOINC to it until we are ready to shutdown the v1 project. We are still investigating further ways to increase performance with the hardware we do have though, and I feel pretty confident that in the end we will be able to handle twice to three times the load we are carrying now on the same hardware.

In the future, when trying to compare loads, I would suggest you actually try comparing number of hosts instead, since it is the hosts that actually generate the load.

I’ll grant you that the bulk of the consumer space uses only one or two machines, but we do have a sizable part of the consumer space that has 10 or more machines that they are contributing to the effort. A few of them even have 100+ machines.

I agree. While I sympathise with Berkeley it was them who asked us to wait for this LOVELY NEW SETI@HOME PROJECT and they should have been aware of the massive demands which would have been placed on them i.e. Old Seti 3.08 1 wu at a time on windows systems, new version = no units for no one at all ???? (I asked for 5 to 10 days worth for several pc’s haven’t seen that yet)

I did wait for this version of BOINC to come out as I live in an area where broadband it not available so storing several work units was a good way to help my phone bill a bit.

I ran Seti@home for:
Results Received 3761
Total CPU Time 3.645 years
Average CPU Time per work unit 8 hr 29 min 19.3 sec
Average results received per day 2.44
Last result returned: Thu Jul 15 22:08:21 2004 UTC
Registered on: Sat Apr 29 23:43:23 2000 UTC

SETI@home user for: 4.226 years
Your group info:
You do not currently belong to a group.
You are not currently the founder of any teams.

Your rank: (based on current workunits received)

Your rank out of 5065419 total users is: 72542nd place.
The number of users who have this rank: 24
You have completed more work units than 98.567% of our users.

All of which my old PII then a single PIII ran all day everyday for a couple of years off my second line.( I have downloaded the RPMs for Fedora about fifteen times to keep the connection open :-)) but the line had to go.

Now I have a few P4's to put to work and lo and behold nothing to do.

So I think it will be the end of me as well.

I wanted to help and I don’t think my computer ringing them every hour to try and get WU's is helping anyone.

Two WU's left which will take about 1hr 45mins.

It doesn't matter if you WERE doing 2 million a day. When this piece of crap stopped, it stopped for EVERYONE which means the number yesterday is going to be a lot more like zero. Besides, I'm sure the classic numbers would be quite higher had BOINC not taken so many users and wasted their time and energy which COULD have been used utilizing software that ACTUALLY WORKS.

If you want to make a comparison, you compare two like objects. Like the returns in a 24 hour period. Not the classic returns of one day compared to the returns one day LAST WEEK for BOINC.

Get your s**t up to speed and I not only will listen, I'll switch back to BOINC (notice I am still here after uninstalling that piece of crap)......but as long as it a NON WORKING piece of garbage....toot your horn to the folks more worried about their screensaver than returning WU's.

There will NEVER be enough work to keep everyones computer crunching 24/7.

This is NOT Seti 1, where they just kept sending out units over and over again to keep you happy. In addition, the majority of Seti crunchers haven't even come over to BOINC yet. Guess what will happen when they do.

BOINC was developed to be a MULTI Project Platform and to keep your comps crunching you're are going to have to develop a MULTI Project attitude.
