Message 129092 - Posted: 27 Jun 2005, 23:37:12 UTC

I have been getting the No heartbeat from client error quite a bit lately (see e.g. this wu) and I can't figure out what it means or how to get rid of it.

Also in the error log it has: Result: exited with zero status but no 'finished' file. Most of the time these wu's don't finish, it's in the middle of the wu and starts over.

System is Fedora Core 3, 80G hdd, 2.8G HT P4, and 512M ram, brand new might I add, running Metod's 4.44 bc, and due to an incident with up2date and selinux, 4.02 regular seti app...

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks!
Jordan

I can only help if it makes you feel better to know you're not alone, not by far. I've noticed these more frequently lately. (winxpsp1, 4.45/6)

The oddest thing is I've got two other comps, a p4 2.8g non-ht, winxp sp1, and no errors on it, and a amd 2000+, win2000 sp2 (or 3???), and no errors on that one, both of those running bc 4.45, seti app 4.18... See here. The Linux computer is the only one that has given me that error.

Could you send this to Rom? I believe that he is under the impression that this is a linux only problem.

I've got two similar messages on the following 2 WU's.
Does anyone know what they mean ?

No heartbeat from core client for 31 sec - exiting

@Anusharma, you might wanna go to "your account", and then "General Preferences" and increase the amount of hard drive space available for the projects. It might cure the above message.

Well, I seem to have lots of space....these are my settings

Use no more than 1 GB disk space
Leave at least 0.1 GB disk space free
Use no more than 50% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use no more than 75% of total virtual memory

and I've got about 35 GB free on my HD right now..and SETi@Home is using only about 8 MB at any given time.

Since the validators are down I don't know the status of this particular WU yet, although it shows that it has completed alright.

So I was just wondering about the msg...it seems to have been only this result.

Thought about, posting in Paul's strange message log entries....but didn't because it is not a message log entry, strictly speaking.....Lol !

Seti has things called "Noisey" WU. WUs that contain lots of RFI (radio frequency interference). The noise causes calculation to become large in memory useage.

This is what the Wiki has to say about this message:

SETI@Home Informational message -9 result overflow
From BOINCWiki
This message means that more data was generated than there was storage space assigned to recieve the data. The most common cause for this message is RFI or Radio Frequency Interference.

Retrieved from "http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=SETI%40Home_Informational_message_-9_result_overflow"

click on the link to go to the wiki, here is the exact page. Or you can click on the link above my sig and go to the main wiki page.

hope this helps

tony
