Tried to update my firewall from version 5.5 to 6, Boinc will not work. Machine is slow and I get Boinc screensaver being loaded then a blank screen. I wait for about 5 minutes then nothing so I go back to 5.5 then Boinc works so what is causing it?

Which firewall?

BOINC uses ports 1043 and 31416 for communications between the Manager and the Daemon (The Daemon opens the port to listen, and the Manager calls in). The daemon uses port 80 to communicate with the project servers. So a firewall could be affecting either or both.

Sygate 5.5 Personal Firewall it was free from Microsoft with the XP magazine is the one I use. I downloaded 6.0 from their website.

I think it was free with "Windows the offical XP Magazine", not so much free from Microsoft. Now, Sygate does have a free firewall, but not the one you're after. If you want to update your firewall, you'll have to pay for it after 30 days of use.
Or else it'll degrade into lesser functionality.

Yet why did you want to upgrade the firewall anyway? If it works, it works, I would say.

Thought it was 6.0 could be 5.6 which is free does not paying for after 30 days.

Will keep 5.5 and get rid of the 8.8 Mb download.
