I'm running a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz hyperthreading processor (supports SSE2). I run two applications all the time: SETI and Prime95 (searches for Mersenne prime numbers).

When I first added SETI to the system, I noticed the system idle process clocking quite a bit of time (checked via the Windows task manager). I discovered that by setting processor affinities, the system idle process stopped getting any time at all (GOOD thing).

After a reboot, I now set the processor affinity of Prime95 to 0, and SETI to 1. By setting the affinity of BOINC and BOINCMGR to 1 also, I find that this affinity is maintained from one WU to the next. Wish this could be an option in preferences.

It's interesting to note that when I switched to the enhanced SETI application, my processing times fell from about 15,000 to 6,000 seconds. Great improvement.

I just upgraded my system to a P4 3.4Ghz 64bit with 2 meg cache and HT. The price of the cpu was cheap but I never expected it to crunch 2 work units at a time in Seti-Boinc.
One thing I had to do was to run another 3 fans and update my case so that I could cool the cpu and mobo. Also the Thermaltake Typhoon cpu cooler does wonders compared to the standard fan and heatsink.

Cheers

Bill
