This may be slightly off-topic but I was wondering if anyone knew when LHC planned to go public? Or is there a planned time? That was a project I'd really be interested in doing work for.

There is no set date. The existing work comes in spurts (after the scientists make new work), and is quickly absorbed by the puters that are currently attached.

With the current "staff" of 6,000 participants right now, well, we can't seem to keep work pending long enough. Because we are blowing through the work so fast there is no need at the present time for more participants.

So, they froze the sign-up. If they can get a steadier supply of work, and we are not processing it so fast they have always said they would open back up. This last time out has lasted nearly a month, so the work is very sporatic. Though we did just seem to get a short crop of work, but they were only 15 minute type work units.

One of the main reasons to limit the number of participants is to allow the use of a lower amount of resources to host the project. The good news is that there are a number of new projects in the wings that have gone public, and there are several more in "closed" testing. And no, I don't know their names... in general *I* don't do beta testing as I have enough troubles with my "hobby" as it is ...
