Has anyone had any success running pcAnywhere under Linux? Is there a "Linux" equivalent to pcAnywhere? I run most of my "farm" using pcAnywhere....no monitor, no kbd, no mouse. Thanks. |

You could use VNC (X-Server), or login via SSH (Terminal). There might be other possibities, but those are the ones I know. |

Do both of those methods require "UX" on both (or all) machines? |

VNC is definately the easiest solution as there are both server and client software freely available for Linux, Windows and Mac. Ned *** My Guide to Compiling Optimised BOINC and SETI Clients *** *** Download Optimised BOINC and SETI Clients for Linux Here *** |

Apart of the fact that you don't need any GUI for remote controlling boinc/seti (ssh and screen are the console tools you are looking for) on linux, VNC is the solution if you are stucked with a GUI. As a recommendation for ssh client for windows you may try PuTTY. Good luck. |

Thanks for the inputs. I think I'll try the VNC first, since I will be using a W2K machine to control the "UX" computer and I will need to be able to "reboot" the "UX" machine. |

Thanks for the inputs. A gentle 'shutdown -r now' from a SSH connection (via Putty on the Win2000 machine) will do the trick as well. (login can occur in SSH/Terminal while actual System is running a GUI) |

I have to confess to being "command line" challenged. I'm much more "point-and-click" oriented. I'm going to give up some Windows licenses and want to use a less-expensive OS. I don't want a "forever" learning curve and can manage GUI interfaces, if I can find the "UX" utilities to replace the tools I've grown accustomed to in the Windows environment. The tool I probably use the most allows me to "recover" memory space after apps are unloaded...........keeps my crunchers online longer. I've implemented Red Hat previously and never kept with it long enough to find all the tools I want. I just down-loaded FC4 and VNC to install tomorrow in a "sorta spare" machine. I appreciate everyone's information and help. |
