I have a number of computers running Boinc and I would like to know how to control the Boinc setup remotely from another computer using the Boinc program.
About all I know about the remote control option is that its on port number 1043. The Select Computer box has 2 fields to enter e.g. "Host Name" and "Password". ???

In Boinc version 4.45 (not sure when this feature was added) in boincmgr you can use the file menu and then "select computer". The addon boincview allows you to view all computers at the same time.

To authorize remote access you can use either the -allow_remote_gui_rpc command line option with the boinc.exe client or use a remote_hosts.cfg file in your BOINC directory. If you use the -allow_remote_gui_rpc command line option make sure you add password protection as otherwise anybody would be able to connect to your system. Place a password in a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg in your BOINC directory.

I use a remote_hosts.cfg instead which limits the systems that can connect via RPC. Create this file in your Boinc directory and add a list of allowed DNS host names or IP addresses (one per line). You will need to restart Boinc for it to see the remote_hosts.cfg file.

The Wiki has an example of the file too ... Remote Hosts File.

The file will work just as well with the "hostname" following the IP separated by a blank.

Does the password utility only work in command-line boinc?

I have four windows computers running BOINC 4.45 as a service. I added the remote_hosts.cfg file with the IP of my main computer to one of the other computers but I still connot connect to it. The remote computer does record a message that remote access is allowed ( ie. it found the remote_hosts.cfg file ).

Has anyone been able to "select computer" when using BOINC as a service?

If yes, then any idea what I am doing wrong?

PS: each computer has a few users and the BOINC service is running on the four computers with various user ID's, each with the same password.

I run some boxes on my LAN installed as a service. I had better luck by using my main boxes network name, not it's IP in the remote_hosts.cfg file. Other than that I think we are set up the same. Don't forget to restart Boinc after the edit of the file!

Have success using the remote_hosts.cfg file to connect to the
rest of the computers on my network. Two questions concerning this
though:

1. Using the remote_hosts.cfg file, how can I add the requirement to use a password?

2. How can I get it to 'snap' back to the current system?
(so far have had to exit boincmgr, and restart it)

I believe that there is a file that you create that contains a password. (I don't use this mechanism, so I don't remember the name of the file.

You select the computer "localhost" with no quote marks.

You have to creat another file which contains the password. File name is gui_rpc_auth.cfg and put it in the boinc directory also. Good Luck and don't forget to restart boinc after you add the file.

Password file worked, thank you both (John & Geek@play).
The localhost I tried, just kinda locked up on me.
Perhaps a setting on mu end. Will play with it and post
if I get a success at this station.

Try using the local computer network name. That works for me.

It's hit & miss with either the NetBIOS name, or the IP address.
I don't use the function that often, but when I do would be nice
to have it perform consistantly.

The netbios name is contacted when BOINC starts. If the machine is not up, it will not be able to control that host.

I have a DNS server that is extremely flakey - it cannot seem to keep the NetBIOS names of local machines straight for any operation BOINC or otherwise. It is possible that you have some sort of similar problem. I have no problem at all with the remote control using the IP addresses at home or the NetBIOS names at work.

Think you're right John, NetBIOS has been real flaky, and I was
using dynamic IP assigned from my server. Switched over to static
assigned IP's and things seem to be running better.

Either a WINS, or DNS server daemon is needed to make it almost foolproof...
Will work on that weekend after next.

I have ONE computer that I have to address by IP for several things, but for others I can use the name ... really odd as it is not configured differently (at least not knowingly) from any of the other machines on the network ...
