Why has my faster computer got a slower to completion time than my other computer.
My faster computer is a Hyperthreaded P4 running at 2800Mhz and my slower computer has a Athlon xp 2200+ running at 1800Mhz.
Yea and another thing the faster computer has 1Gig of RAM while the slower computer has only 512Mb's of RAM, but the completion time of the P4 2.80 (the faster computer) is 06:19:53 while my Athlon computer has a completion time of only 04:39:51.
I don't understand it!

What are the cache sizes, and have you tried the P4 w/o HT?

Because it's HT enabled. It acts like 2 cpu's crunching 2 WU's at once.
Luckiest in the world. WMD = Weapon of Mass Distraction.

Probably because your P4 is crunching 2 workunits at a time, and therefore completes 2 workunits in 6:19:53, your athlon xp needs 2 * 4:39:51 to do that. :)

My PC - a P4 2.4 Ghz, 1GB RAM, hyperthreated on - crunches a wu in 2h15. In single cpu-mode it completes a wu in 1h20. Have to say I use Tetsuji's optimized crunchers. It also depends on what services you are running.

As Speedy said, it is the difference between speed and throughput. The P4 is "slower" but accomplishes more work in the unit time.

I have a nice example of just that situation in throughput ...

Still, 6+ hrs per 2 WUs is a lot of time. As comparison, a P4 3.2GHz in HT mode will do 2WUs in less than 2 hours. (That's with the new optimized version).

Something else is slowing you down - other processes, a virus, or overheated CPU / memory. Check your BIOS - it should tell you the CPU temp and speed. Also, P4s will "downclock" automatically when overheated, and motherboards will sometimes drop to less than 800 MHz FSB equivalent.

... Excuse me for butting in, but how do I check my BIOS? I seem to have some memory of changing rebooting once to change something in my BIOS... is there a less invasive way of doing it?

You should be able to get into the BIOS (CMOS) by pressing one of several possible special keys when your computer first starts up (ie before it starts reading from the hard disk to load the operating system).

It's a different key press for different systems. For Compaqs it's usually F10, Dell is F2, a long time ago Gateway was F5. Asus motherboards use the Delete key. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Most systems will show you what key to press when they boot.

Press F10 to enter setup...
