I just wanted to say that I've been using BOINC since it started and I am quite happy with it. Of course the stats and other stuff is different from SETI Classic but that certainly that is not the end of the world.

People moaning and threatening about how they hate BOINC and will stop using it are missing the point.

I think most of us are here in the hope that what little we can contribute will one day help in identifying other intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

I am certainly not here to see how fast I am rising in the stats or fallling for that matter.

I will be the happiest person on earth the day we can identify an extraterrestial signal. Regardless of whose computer actually validated that signal.

So guys and girls please lighten up !

Bravo, also see this thread.

I agree, we need to think about the science. Work for the cause. Keep crunching away.

He!he!

I guess this just goes to show how even the most enthusiastic of us sometimes miss common or similar threads.

Thanks ... I posted this in reply, I admit I don't goto anyother forum other than this one unless pointed. I only have so much time and thisforum on 5 project usually uses an hour of my time to read and post each day ...

=========================
'Paul's documentation' does NOT answer many of the queries which I have been watching for a very long time and are repetitive. So why not put a definitive up-front definition on a document available on this site?

What questions?

I ask in the forums, I ask in the site, I have e-mail boxes on every page ... know how often I get a question? Maybe once a month, Maybe, usually I don't get any.

And you can ask around if I have not answered an e-mail sent to me. Even if it is to say that I don't know ...

The FAQ I wrote has 511 articles, most don't have more than a few hits.

I grant I have not been active answering the FAQ when people ask questions there ... but, I have been busy trying to get as much of the documentation under one roof as possible, that includes all of mine, all of the official UCB documentation site (I still have about 10-15 pages left to do, but I get one every day or so).

The biggest complaint I hear is not that there is not enough information, it is that there is too much ... before I started on the Wiki conversion, I had a page count of over 700 pages of material ...

Last points,
1) there is a site wide search for the old site using phpDig, and
2) the Wiki has its own full site search.
3) The Glossary that I have has about 300 terms right now, and I am adding more each day from the old site.
4) Messages and meanings is anther major expansion where I found over 200 messages I did not have in the old FAQ ...
5) there are 5 people that are active in adding and updating content now, instead of only me. Though truth be told I will probably always be the most prolific author as I have the time and inclination. And if some other domain expert wanted to add, and they are a positive contributer to the BOINC Community (yes, in my opinion right now) or are a project developer, well, all they have to do is to ask ...
6) if the material is too hard to find, tell me how to make it easier ... jsut saying it is too hard is no help ...

Anyway, my hit rates really don't justify the work I have put in, but I am doing this on the off chance that it will help someone.

But I cannot answer the question you don't ask. And I look in on all 5 active production projects in the number crunching forum, usually 2 times a day ...

And I cannot answer the question you did not ask ...

I wholeheartedly agree. This is the reason I am here and have been for as long as I could. Well said, Sir.

"Moaning" has its place. Sometimes, comments made here about something that does not work well helps generate ideas that may be used to fix a current problem or be incorporated in future revisions. But if you are so upset with the project that you are giving up and just don't want to crunch anymore, then why do you feel you must tell me about it?

Then again, moaning about folks who moan has its own limitations in terms of being the 'right' behavior. (smile).

personally i love all the threats that state they are going to quit SETI or BOINC completely; but yet they never do.

i find BOINC to be very agreable, yes there are some issues, but i see that the devs are working on most of them. so i sit back and relax ;)

happy crunching

I can't agree more. The developers based on my observations have made a product, while not yet perfect is considerable better then when I first started with it, and actually easy and enjoyable to work with. Keep up the good work guys and place the overly wound up types in the cone of silence.
