i just joined seti@home and i noticed that there is a credit counter on the screen saver. what are the credits for?

Basically, credit, measured in 'cobblestones', measures how much work you have done for the project, eg SETI.

For a detailed explanation of the whole credit system visit the (very good) manual for Boinc BOINC Powered Projects Documentation by Paul D. Buck and the FAQ therein.<br />

Yes, credits do not do anything other than indicate how much valuable work you have done.
