I switched from Classic to BOINC4.43 yesterday on my G5 Mac with OS 10.3.9. The Manager window shows three work units completed. I have the following questions: 1. Why is the Preferences button deactivated in the BOINC Manager window? 2. Why is the "Report Deadline" June 17, a full two weeks away? 3. Why does my Account page show only work units completed through March 15, 2005? 4. Why doesn't my Account page show the three units newly completed under BOINC? |

Welcome Moe. 1. Why is the Preferences button deactivated in the BOINC Manager window? A: Prefences are controlled from your account page on the website, not via the client. Therefore there is no need for the Preferences setting on your Mac. That is why it is greyed out. 2. Why is the "Report Deadline" June 17, a full two weeks away? A. That is when the units must be returned by to get credit. There is a two week deadline they must be returned by. 3. Why does my Account page show only work units completed through March 15, 2005? A: I am guessing you are referring to the SETI CLASSIC units. Those are not live statistics, but should receive a final update when SETI Classic closes down. Those were your stats at the last update of March 15, 2005. 4. Why doesn't my Account page show the three units newly completed under BOINC? A: The units have been returned, but BOINC uses a different validation method. It takes a little getting used to, but does prevent the cheating that was so prevelent under Classic SETI. You indicate you are using the Graphic version so the next steps are easy. - Go to the Projects tab - Highlight SETI in the window. - Click the updates button. This forces a manual update (you will need to be connected to the internet.) The units showing completed in the window will disappear and but will be viewable under your computer list on your account page. There you will see one of two things. - If the work unit hasn't been validated by two other computers yet, it will show "claimed credit" but not awarded credit - if the work has been validated then it will show awarded credit and that credit will show also on your main account page. Be aware that awarded credit is the middle of the claimed credit for all three validating computers, so it can be greater or lesser then your claimed credit. Once you get used to it, BOINC works very well. And you can use the same application to participate in multiple projects at one time if you like. Team MacNN - The best Macintosh team ever. |
