it seem that Seti Classic is going to an End...

June 1, 2005
We are switching the http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ URL to point here. The SETI@home Classic web site has been moved to http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu.

Well, all good things have to come to an end sometime.

With SETI, the good thing is that the end is just a new beginning :)

Beauty!
This should be our new slogan.

Been waiting for web link through client to point to this site since first install of BOINC.
For me this is the sign of the beginning of the real migration.
I hope we can bring over many of the more stubborn Classics so they can see the potential in this BOINC thing.
But I do remember my first feelings of mistrust and anger when I first heard of BOINC.
I hope this will be a good experience for the forced converts.
It is time for all of us in the SETI to unite.

It's kinda funny though, for if you follow the old link to the index page of Seti Classic, you end up at the old BOINC beta board index: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/index.html

The worst part of moving classic S@H to BOINC is going to be all the complaining that will come with it.

Just 4.25 to 4.43 is bad enough.

Maybe most people coming over here will surprise us and not complain. After all we are doing it for the science. right.

Which just goes to prove the old axiom:

Sure - 700+ pages just to get started, and it doesn't even yet include the obtuse logic of the new un-scheduler.

That should eliminate some questions - NOT!

I have a suggestion!

Someone (or a few someones) should get together and make a list of the MOST commonly asked questions. Questions like:

-Where are my stats?
-How come my cache isn't filling up?
-What's resource share?

Stuff like that, that people in Classic have no idea how to handle. Then, type them up with short answers in a new thread in a single post (the first post, obviously) called something like "ATTN NEW BOINC USERS: PLEASE READ HERE FOR ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS BEFORE MAKING A NEW THREAD." Then sticky this thread to the top of the forums.

This way we can head off answering the common questions 60000000000 times.

Is the SETI team playing "Hide the Ball" with us concerning the transition schedule from Classic SETI? I haven't seen any schedule updates in either the Home Page News area or the Technical News page, which is where I'd expect to find it, or find a link to it.

There are lots of clues: they are panicking the Classic users; they just relocated the science database; the BOINC GUI's seem just about ready for the more popular platforms. There are less obvious clues too, such as the recent run-ups that Matt has done on the Ready to Send work units (which he normally keeps at about half a million, but has increased by another 50% several times in the last week or so, apparently testing to be sure that they can meet the demand when Classic shuts down). So, yes, I agree that it's tempting to guess that the end is near.

My apologies to the SETI team if the current schedule is public and I've just missed it. If not, I don't see why we have to depend on little clues and play a guessing game while they hide the ball???

Can anybody point to a current and correct transition schedule?

Thanks!

--Bill
