Carrie Nation

Hamilton County Ledger, 17 August, 24 August 1900.
The Tipton hatchet assault predated coverage of Carrie Nation's similar action in Kansas by nearly four months. A Hartford City, Indiana woman who attacked a saloon in 1903 would be labeled "a Carrie Nation" by the paper though. See Hamilton County Ledger, 1 January, 8 February, 15 February 1901, 1 May 1903.

"I'LL STAND BY YOU." The words, "Go to Kiowa," were spoken in a murmuring, musical tone, low and soft, but "I'll stand by you," was very clear, positive and emphatic. I was impressed with a great inspiration, the interpretation was very plain, it was this: "Take something in your hands, and throw at these places in Kiowa and smash them." I was very much relieved and overjoyed and was determined to be, "obedient to the heavenly vision" (Acts 26:19).

The tavern was in Kiowa, Kansas, on that corner there is a bank where the tavern was and a memorial to Carrie Nation
She and her husband lived in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He was an alcoholic and Medicine Lodge was dry, so he would go to Kiowa for his drinking. He would often drink until he was broke and leave his family hungry.
Another note about Kiowa is that it is where the last cattle drive to Kansas from Texas ended. The rail head had been extended from Wichita to Kiowa.
