Message 114044 - Posted: 23 May 2005, 5:39:38 UTC

Hi everybody!
Situation is as follows:
One of my computers will be out of action for a couple of days for maintanance.
Can I tranfer all the work to a different computer, lets say via memory stick, and have the work done there? Will there be a way to get new WU's, although the computers ID do not match with the one in the data base? And can I transfer all the data back after the computer is back from maintanace?
Best regards

No, this is not possible; the other Machine's BOINC would not accept these WorkUnits and immediately discard them.

Technically, there 'is' a way of manually fooling around deep inside the BOINC's Control Files to fool it into accepting the WorkUnits, but it is neither officially supported nor desired, and additionally very prone to errors.

if you're not that close to deadlines, and it's only for a couple of days, you should be in the clear (i.e. no need to do anything). Otherwise you could set the boinc client on that host to not request more work, let it run dry and then take it offline ;) (can be done with boincview or boinc 4.43)

Thanks for all the answers!
Number of days the computer will be offline is unknown, since it is going to be sent back to manufacturer for repair (a guarantee issue). During this time I will have a replacement available and my intention eas to transfer all the stuff to this box and have it crunching, but it seems not to work. So the only option is to let it run dry.
Bye.

If you transfer the entire BOINC directory tree, it should work.

Yes, you should be able to do as John says.

1. Shut down BOINC and uninstall
2. move the BOINC folder to a pen drive
3. copy the BOINC folder from the pen drive to the replacement machine
4. install BOINC on the replacement machine.
5. BOINC should find everything it needs already in place and should simply start the science app and continue where it left off on the original machine.

Just do the reverse when you get your own machine back.

Before you send your own machine away can you try this on the replacement machine just to confirm that it works as expected?
Cheers,
Gary.

I will try to transfer it via memory stick and let the community know about the outcome.

If you return any results from the temp machine and the scheduler see that the computer is different don't be surprise if no credit is granted.
The scheduler knows which cpu it sent what wu.
good luck

Yeah, he knows the machine to which he has sent the WU's. But how about transferring everthing back and then return results?

It was even easier then described above.
1.) Just moved everything, including BOINC software, to the pen drive.
2.) Inserted pen drive into USB port AND
3.) Started BOINC from the pen drive!

It's crunching ! Hope the way back is as easy as that!

Pen drives were not really designed for the high frequency of writes. It will burn out a bit more quickly. However, as this is supposed to be for a few days, it should be OK.

Meanwhile I got the box back and everything has been transfered back from the replacement computer. It worked perfect and all results have been counted.
