4.43 is now the recommended core client version. Now there is 4.19 as the "old" version. Enjoy the new change.

Warning: 4.43 is NOT developmental anymore, use it all you want.

I'm curious why the "old" version isn't 4.25. Perhaps this is a website edit error (although they seem quite specific about this)?

I've been using 4.25 since they declared it golden with no problems. I've held off using the later versions because they had some issues (development versions with no immediate benefit to me). I think 4.25 should still be made available to those who want it no matter what the official "old" version is.

IMHO the features of 4.25 seem to be much better than 4.19. Why would they backtrack on the old version number?

AH, new version! I love it. Being a little paranoid about development versions, I've been waiting for this for a while, especially for the ability to get no new work from a project. (That's what happens when you're on a lot of projects!)

So far, looks pretty good. Can't wait to see it churn out the results.

I'm curious why the "old" version isn't 4.25.

Because 4.19 can still show all graphics for all projects that have them, where as 4.25 - 4.4x have problems with ATI cards.

(Checking the dev list, it would seem there's a fix coming on for this problem...)

I forgot about that. I don't have any ATI cards and I don't look at the graphics very much. I think the idea of two "old" versions might fit here. The backward compatibility of 4.19 and the features of 4.25.

I'm still not sold on 4.43 so having access to "old" golden versions would be helpful for me.

That's why you save every optional version to your harddrive, or ask team members who have done so through email for such a version, Pink Hare. ;)

But I didn't save them, silly me :-)I also thought this might be a wider issue than just our team. I certainly would ask the team if I needed help.

Bottom Line: I think BOINC version 4.25 should be officially available.

PINK? You insult me :-) I'm a royal purple rodent!

They are still saved on the server. You just have to type in the correct URL, and down they will come.

As 4.25 is not even the 'official' old version, when will be 'encouraged' to migrate to 4.43? I'm still reluctant to do this, because good 'old' 4.25 has given me absolutely no trouble even when I changed my GeForce FX (it just died of exhaustion) with ATI Radeon.

I think I've started something bigger than I expected.

My original question related to why the BOINC team would revert back to a version earlier than what they had officially released. Ageless pointed out a reason and I agree. I think both 4.19 and 4.25 should be publicly available without recourse to "obscure" server links. Both versions have their advantages.

I'm sorry I asked :-) but thanks everyone.

Are people still seeing the v4.43 core client spike to 99% CPU utilization even when benchmarks aren't running? If this bug is really confirmed, it would be a pretty big reason for sticking with v4.25 or v4.19.

John,
Do you know where the "developmental Versions" are going to be listed now?
In the same place?

Respectfully,

Rocky

Hi,

with 4.43 i got:

7 Einstein ghost units
3 SETI ghost units
7 Protein ghost units
4 Climate ghost units
99% CPU utilization of boinc.exe while no benchmarks running
and lots of too recent RPCs.

I am going to stick with 4.25 until these boards prove that only i can see these phantoms ;-)

Cheers
Femue

I have just updated from .42 -.43, however I am a little unhappy at the latest versions handling of the work cache. I run Burp, Einstien, Seti and Pirates.

On my home pc (P4 3.0Ghz HT on permanent connection) I am currently out of work completely, for the first time in months, because of its refusal to keep any cache due to the way the debt is handled for Burp and Pirates, which obviously don't have work very often at present. So when there is an outage on my two main projects - I end up with nothing to do...

I have reduced my resource share for these projects but this means when work does arrive - I won't see much of it, even though I am happy to crunch these projects in equal share with the others. I have my connect to set to 4 days, which used to be enough to cope with most problems at either Seti or Einstein.

I'm running BOINC (4.42) as a service, and edited the windows registry to add the -return_results_immediately parameter. This should also work with 4.43, BOINC now reports results immediately when they're done, and keeps a full cache on my system (also a p4 3.0Ghz HT :-)
I should mention that this is not the recommended way (see this post).

(edit: deleted the detailed registry explanation because backslashes don't seem to show up in messages here)

Greetings,
Speedy67

Hrm, I seem to be able to make a backslash show up.

You need 2 of them to show 1, because of HTML posting.

The installation of boinc 4.43 as a service on my win2k advanced server wasn't exactly smooth, I stopped 4.25 and all it's processes as usual, ran the install, which appeared to run OK, but, nothing got put into the start menu, and the service would not restart, even after a reboot. I had to re-run the install, picking the repair option, when that was done, all was OK, all WU's present and correct, remote RPC working OK. Happy for now until something goes wrong :-)
