Well, I comment my problem when I use newer version from 4.19, my actual version. When I install a new version of the client, in the installation I can choose about an unique account or serverals account, or the thirth option is execute boinc as a service of winXP. I use serveral accounts, one with administrator privilege and other with user privilige, that is use normally, so in the installation I select the second option becouse in this case I can manage de boinc client when I am a normal user, so if I need to disabled boinc in a any moment, i can do without changing to the administrator account. But the problem is that the directory where i install boinc, only can be access by the administrator account (i only use tow accounts so i don´t know if i could or not to access from other user with administrator privilages), becouse if i try to access at this directory from the other account (normal user) i receive a message warning me about i can't access to this directory becouse i haven´t got permision (the message is "access denied") to access to the boinc directory, so i can´t run boinc, although in the programs-->start directory there is an direct access to this program to start it in windows start up. I supose that if this direct access to run it at the start up is becouse is the correct choise during installation, but restrict the access to the directory in the same form that it is done in the first of the options, in wich the direct access don´t be created. So I think that this problem could be a bug and only it may necessary to correct this problem not restricting the access to the boinc directory. This problem don´t happend with de version 4.19, but severals newer versions that i probe have this problem, so by the moment i will continue to use this version until this problem is solved. I hope that my experience could help you. Daimroc. P.D.: sorry for my english. |

Well, could you say me how could i do that? Becouse I don´t sure if this permission is given in the options of the boinc directory or I must modify the user groups of windows XP. Thanks. Daimroc. |

First you must make sure you are not using "simple file sharing". Then you can change the properties for the folder you are interested in. Open a folder (any folder) and Select Tools>Folder Options... Click on the View tab and scroll all the way to the bottom of the "Advanced Settings" box. The last item should say Use simple file sharing (Recommended). You must make sure that this is not selected. Now navigate to the location of the BOINC directory [c:\Program Files for a default install]. Right-click on the BOINC folder and select Properties. Click on the Security tab and highlight the user named Everyone in the top box. If you do not see the user named Everyone, you can add this user with the Add... button. With the Everyone user highlighted, check the Full Control box under the allow column. There you go. 7,049 S@H Classic Credits |

Thanks for your answer. But I think that it would be better that if in the installation choose the second option, it would´t must modify the permission of the folder, becouse this forces to modify the global configuration of the whole folders, and it's somethnig that i prefer not to do. Is there any posibilty to contact with developers to suggest the posibility to change this for boinc works like the version 4.19 in this particular case?. Thanks. Daimroc. |

...becouse this forces to modify the global configuration of the whole folders...
You're right, this could be a security issue, but you're only modifying the attributes of the BOINC folder (and any sub folders). I would tend to think that this would be acceptable as BOINC is not critical or sensitive enough data to be sheilded from other users on the machine. If you are worried about that you could: un-install your current BOINC, move the remaining folder contents to another location, and re-install BOINC to the new location.
Is there any posibilty to contact with developers to suggest the posibility to change this for boinc works like the version 4.19 in this particular case?.
I agree that this solution is not ideal because the installer has to modify folder permissions. The developers are working on other problems but they should be told about this. I don't know where the bug-reporting mechanism is (bugzilla maybe?) but someone else should be able to point this out to you.
Ok, same problem, the XP edition worked fine as you suggested, but the XP Home Editon, I still need help, because I have the same problem.
I hate XP Home... but this should still work provided the drive is formatted as NTFS and you try to make these changes using the Administrator account. To get to the Administrator account in XP Home you must reboot and enter "Safe Mode". (Hit the F8 key when you see the Windows Logo during bootup.) 7,049 S@H Classic Credits |

Yes, it worked for XP Home!!! Thanks, but as stated before - I hope a newer version (other than 4.40) of boinc will correct the security issue. Thanks again. Reminder: Developmnet version are for the brave and willing to test! |
