Seti@home on BOINC sends out four work units and waits whilst three are returned in order to validate the results. When you return a work unit and this quorum has not been reached you will see it in pending status. Once sufficient work units have been returned the validator process will take the median value of these three and grant everybody (including the fourth when it is returned) this median value as credit.
