Hi, today a strange thing has happened to my Boinc 4.25 client. It shows no projects attached (nor seti or predictor). It shows no MESSAGES in the messages folder. Yesterday morning all goes well as always...I was surprised...i try to make a fresh install, deleting all the boinc folder and projects files but nothing. I've checked for occurrences of boinc in the registry and I deleted them...done another fresh install but nothing again. So I've inspected the stderrgui file but it's empty; i've checked the stdoutgui file and it contains tons of: Retrieving system state; please wait... Retrieving host information; please wait... With the help of KPF i've checked that boinc is just opening a connection to my machine (localhost) on port 1043.... Any idea? I did not install any kind of patch or update to my system...and yesterday boinc runned as always. I put down Kerio...but again Boinc does not run...it can't even attach a project. The only update since yesterday was Avast antivirus signature.... Cannot crunch for today :-( My config: Windows XP SP2 (all windows update patches installed), Kerio PF, Avast Antivirus, AMD Athlon XP 2200+ with an Ati 9000 based GFX card, 512mb RAM. Thanks for the help Best regards Simon |

in short, all tabs are empty? If so, try shutting down and restarting a couple times. Or click "File", Select computer and try typing "Localhost" into the "computer" box. does this help? tony |

I'm very unhappy :-( |

I'm afraid I've done all I can. This usually works for most people. You must feel "Special"....LOL Be patient, I'm sure someone smarter than I will be here shortly to help, or atleast try to. tony [edit] When you installed 4.25 did you get prompted twice by Avast? Once for Boinc Manager and then again for the Boinc Client? Also, which install did you do (Single user, shared, or Service)? |

It seems that it can't connect lo localhost or 127.0.0.1....this is untrue because, as Kerio states, Boinc.exe is opening a connection on local host on 127.0.0.1:1043 Bye |

sometimes typing the computer name in stead of localhost works. I know localhost doesn't work on my computer whereas it computer names does ;)
Check windows firewall and make sure the port number is open. You may have to make a manual entry for that. The first time you ran it there should have been a question if you want to permit access. You should have entries for BOINC Core Client Command Line Interface and BOINC Manager. There is also a bug where the first opening of the BOINC Manager may not make a connection. Close it and open it again for that problem. |

Kerio has rights to Boinc Core Client Command Line and Boinc Manager to open any kinds of connections! Btw, I've fixed now the problem doing another fresh install. I've notice that Boinc manager cannot connect to localhost when an Internet connection is already been opened. Launching BOINC before connecting to the internet just works fine. I will investigate the problem a bit more....i'm quite sure it's a bug of the boinc client...i can't yet understand why this bug happens after months of good work. Thanks again for the help you provided me.... Crunching again now :-))))) I installed version 4.36 beta....it's great!!! |

Changes are happening as we are still trying to get all platforms up to the same basic level of functionality. At that point we can start to work on all the nice to have things. And, maybe take some time to figure out the odd bugs that hit people. Make sure if you figure out what happened that you post a bug in the bug base. |

Paul, I never realized we were supposed to allow exceptions for both the Core Client and BOINC Manager. My firewall has only ever had the one exception for the CLI and it's always worked great. Perhaps it's a bit different if you do the service install? I'm using version 4.25 here. Just curious, Dig |

hey Digger, I've had to allow BOTH starting with 4.20 and every install since. I'm using "Single User.
Well, perhaps it has something to do with my installing the Boinc CLI as a Local System Account or something. My firewall has never asked permission for Boinc Manager and it isn't listed among the exceptions. Oh well, doesn't really matter I guess... I was just curious. :) Dig |

I didn't try 4.20, but I've had to allow both since 4.25.
It's rare that I even startup Boinc Manager. I don't allow it to load at boot time cause it's unnecessary with the service install and just wastes resources. The CLI and the project app are usually the only two things running, and I only know that from looking in Task Manager. I'll open up BoincView or Boinc Manager maybe once or twice a day just to check on things, but other than that there's no need for the GUI. Maybe that's why I've never had to give it permission through the firewall. Dig |
