I can see, I can see. Oh Lord Almighty, thank you... Yes, and? I see the same thing, so what? Just put Boinc in the system tray, it'll work itself out sometime. ;) |

Apparently they are having the same (or similar) problem with their new firewall solution that they encountered last Thursday/Friday. Berkeley needs to get that firewall up and running to conform with university policy. Unfortunately, whatever the problems are, the solution hasn't become apparent so we are seeing communications issues like last week. What makes it a tad more unfortunate and inconvienient is that the leftovers from last weeks outage haven't been totally cleared out of the system -- so we have a bit of a snow ball effect. |

But then we had a problem with a recently installed software firewall. It was working when we left the lab yesterday but cut off the data service interface a short time later. We have switched off this firewall for now. Software firewalls are now required for all machines by campus policy but we will get an exception until ours is working. Note that we are, and always have been, behind a hardware firewall that works great. Given the length of this outage, service will be slow with lots of connection drops until the backlog is cleared. they have to check this out, where the problem is i notice this before, .... btw i have a 3 Day Cache here, no Probs for me... With so many users the software firewall must think it's under attack and closing the connection :) 98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8 And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer. |

> > > Hi there, are you all blind? > > > > No, but we are patient. > > > > ... and sometimes, we do other things. > > WHAT! > > What else is there but BOINC? Oh, don't get me started. There is SOBER.S and while we've all seen a bazillion E-Mail trojans, there is a seemingly inexhaustible number of idiots who see a trojan and say "gee, look at the pretty horse!" Seems to me, if Berkeley wants to really do Science, they should halt work on BOINC and start writing trojans. You don't have to deal with "volunteers" if you just steal computing power. Yet, it isn't stealing if the idiots "volunteer" by clicking on the attachment, is it? Sorry, but for a while yesterday our mail traffic was ten times normal, and I was up rather late figuring out the best way to block SOBER while the anti-virus folks were writing new AV signatures. |
