G5 Dual Semper Eadem So long Paul, it has been a hell of a ride. Park your ego's, fire up the computers, Science YES, Credits No. |

> G5 > Dual I saw that this morning ... as good as I expected, but not as good as I had hoped. :( I was hoping that the CPUs would be dual core and with larger cache ... well, now I have to see how long till I can buy one ... Everette, All I have is the 2.0 GHz and the average run times for the G5 is still better than my 3.4 GHz Xeon, but of course worse in throughput in that there are only 2 work units being processed at one time instead of 4. My expectation would be that the average SETI@Home run time would drop to 2:00 to 2:15 ... the increase in speed is only like 35% so there will not be an overwhelming increase. sigh ... |

The Apple store has it for sale now... Hmmm, the front-side bus is also faster, but that will not make that much of a difference I don't think ... But, it is still nice that they have a larger disk drive than before ... memory is still low, though I do have 2.5 GB in my current PowerMac and usually have 1 GB free ... |

Sorry to break into what is clearly labeled as Paul's thread, but the only thing that impresses me about the 2×2.7 GHz machine is the frontside bus ratio (2:1). I'm still waiting out for a G5 Mini. .o0(please, please, please, please, please...) |

To fit into a Mac Plus case. The CRT on it is dead, and I have very ambitious plans. The Mac Mini motherboard (I-ATX ?) is small enough that it'll fit the Plus, and I've found an 8.4" 800×600 LCD panel that should do nicely. All that's left is rigging up a floppy drive over USB, fitting the power supplies into the case, and rewiring the on/off switch to the panel and mobo. Besides, PowerBook G5s aren't gonna come out anytime soon. I've got 2nd degree burns from laptopping the TiBook as is, and the G5 runs very hot. I'd like to have grandchildren, if you follow my drift... It'd be a heckuva cruncher for a relatively cheap cost. |

What is wrong with either of the ones in the Apple store right now? |

<rant class="big">Coolness factor, mostly. A Mini is not an upgrade from what I've got. I actually see it as a step to the right as opposed to a step up. Sorta like going from a Mac II to an LC... sorta. OK, bad metaphor. But I've got this Plus dying here and it's taking up space. If I can tweak the Mini to fit... well, that's cool by me. I'd be salvaging what I can from a fine box, even if I do say so myself. That would satisfy my need for a cool box, and give me an up-to-date Mac that I could leave on 24/7 crunching, rendering, compiling, etc.. On the Mini specs, though, the CPU and bus speeds are its weakest link. It's still a sub-200MHz FSB. You'd think that if a G5 tower (where the components are nice and far apart) can hit 1.35GHz/CPU, then something as small as a Mini might be able to push the envelope to, oh, I dunno... 1GHz on the nose? That'd be a "? That box would do it, and Steve (being the idiot that he is) is focusing too much on the software aspect. And since we're on the subject of Steve, you've noticed the paradigm shift from Macintosh to NeXT, right? Yes, titanium and aluminum are nice, but just for once I'd like to see a good old-fashioned Quadra-styled box out there. I want my Mac to smile at me again! Why on Earth did Jobs chose to take away the look-and-feel that worked for well over a decade?... </rant>I could go on, but this is not the place for it, is it? |
