Because I need to have a different profile on my work laptop to my home computers I have setup a work profile - and am now in to problems with the BOINC bug concerning not working to preferences - it appears to run all the time.

This would not be too bad but two things are giving me grief, first, Outlook will not function properly while BOINC is active, it takes ages to send / recieve mail, about 10mins per cycle, this normally takes 10-15 secs if that. I have to suspend BOINC to get my mail, not good. Second, the firewalls and proxy at work are down so tight that I cannot download or upload work units, thats no problem, I just make sure that I have enough work in the morning for the day. However I need to turn off BOINC network access, fine all works. But, because I need to suspend BOINC to get my mail and use Outlook, when I resume it also starts network access again, which is a pain. (note that the network access box is still ticked, but it still trys to contact the servers to upload work!)

Ahh well - its all new software I guess :-)

PC.

On second thoughts, I think that BOINC does not resume network activity, even though it says it is on the log.

Yes it does.

It is a tad stupid that boinc does not "remember" the last local preferences it had once you restart it. I hope that is changed with later releases.

Paul,
are you talking about a complete restart, or about a resume processing command (right click on the icon in the tray ). I think you are right about complete restart not remembering any previous settings.

You are getting "network access" and "network activity" mixed up.

My problem was the same with every application. I found out its Anti-Virus. For some reason, BOINC reads/writes to the disk every couple seconds (Used FileMon.exe to verify). Any anti-virus that scans the programfiles~Boinc folder, will slow your computer down.

Just exclude the BOINC directory from anti-virus, and it will be fast agian.
