Okay i have like 4-5 PC's that i dont need anymore. They have been replaced with newer models

So i start to build a "BOINC cluster" with these.

I have some PentiumII and some Celeron mostly with low memory and Windows 98...

I thought i will install Windows XP on every client and use VNC Server or Remote Desktop to watch them from one station.

So far so good. What would be some things i need to do to make those PCs run as fast as they can for crunching ?

thanks for your help

EDIT: I JUST REACHED 100.000 CREDITS :D

Congrats on reaching 100,000! The old machines still need 64 meg of ram AFTER the OS loads, for most Windows users that means 96 or 128 meg of ram or more.
Next I would remove all the old programs that are not needed but are running in the background on those old computers.

First of all, try using BOINCView (go to google.com and look for it) instead that using remote control, second, if you have less than 32 megs or 64 I think, SETI won't run. So try using Win98 that uses less mem.

Since you're running Win XP on your boxes, run the Boinc CLI as a service, ditch Boinc Manager, and use BoincView as MiniZiper suggested. :)

BoincView can be found on the add-on page here.

i do use tightvnc so that i can do management functions that i need to on the systems (such as windows updates, disk defrags, etc), but it does use a lot of processing while you are connected.
i do use boincview, though you rarely do need to make any changes as boinc is rather a set it and forget it. i even turn boincview back off once i check the network since i see that it uses processing to communicate too.

congrats with the 100K and let us know how it goes!

Dump is relative. If you set BOINC Manager so that it does not run at start-up then just having it isn't a big penalty.
