I've just had to rebuid my system and I was looking to check out Helper Software for Boinc. Is there not a page containing links to the various programs that are available? If so please point it out to me, as I can't seem to find it.
Thank you.

Tried to upgrade to XP. I installed the driver for wrong model of an old touch pad mouse (my favourite input device). It locked out both my mouse and keyboard, even in safe mode. I had to do a clean reinstall so I decided to reformat the drive and start from scatch. A million gliches later and I am now back with a good install of win98se. I will try upgrading to XP again next weekend after making a ghost copy of this drive.

BTW anyone know of a good, free, boot drive duplication program.

Personally, and call me old fashioned if you want, I would never upgrade from one win o/s to another. They are never what you want them to be. Advice: (free) write what you need to keep to CD, install XP & import the saved data/installs etc. Safer, cleaner and more predictable! The bags under my eyes have only just gone after I did upgrades like that lol!

Thanks for the replies

@Digger
thanks for the link.
But how do I get there from here....
Just for my future reference what link on the front page gets you there?

@Tigher
I do has you suggested and back up all important data (I always forget something) and keep most of my freeware programs on a back up drive. But, what I need is to duplicate my existing drive so that I dont have to spend the whole weekend rebuild my system to the way I like it, if I crash and burn again. It's a lot faster to switch drives than reinstall 50 programs.

Aurora, on the front page (or any page actually), if you click on 'Participate' then look at the links provided for Returning Participants, the add-ons page is listed there. It's pretty well hidden. The only way i found it myself when i needed it was by searching threads in the forum for mention of it.

I've been using BoincView for some time now and have found it to be much better than the Boinc Manager included with the client.

Happy Crunching :)

You would think Seti would put a link on the download page as it used to be.
Thanks again

You would also think they'll put a link to Pauls manual on the homepage, or at least under 'Learn more' ;)

You can also find some of these "hidden" pages using the cheat tool or Quick links by looking up the page type and then using the image to navigate to the site page.

Me too ... :)

The only problem I have is sometimes it loses track of a computer and I have to stop and restart BOINC View as the "refresh" button does not always pick up the "lost" computer ... now, if only I had more computers to monitor! :)

i don't know of any free utils off hand, but you can try maxtor and/or WD's sites, it may be that they have them (i seem to recall that at least one of them does).
of course, any version of ghost would work too.

and i would NEVER suggest upgrading a MS OS, it is at least a 80% chance that something will mess up. it may not be major, you may not notice it ever, or it might be that when you go to do something 4 months down the road that you are just unable to do it because MS screwed the registry in that area.
working in tech support, i have seen it too many times.
always fdisk, format, and load from boot.
and the easy way to avoid most virii, make a few partitions and make sure that your boot drive is letter E: or later (all the scripts that hit my servers just try to access c: and d:.

I too remember, a few years ago, using a utility that formated, partitioned and ghosted the boot drive. I checked every HD company I could think of with no luck.

I feel Norton is rich enough.

I've often done overlay upgrades, starting back with dos 5.0 and every MS Dos and Windows version since than, and have rarely had any problems.

This is an interesting idea and I do have a 2G partion (somehow got created on my 160G drive when I installed XP - W98 can only see 127G) on my second drive currently D drive. I could install to that after adding a new partition to my curent C drive pushing the 2G to E.

Very true and good advice. I have only ever attempted one 'upgrade' - never again! Far too much unexpected detritus to clear up or just to get tripped up with.

Nice one (:-))

[ Shameless Linux plug (:-]

Meanwhile, if you're doing a full install anyhow, you could give one of the Linux distros a try. Its the expected long download to get the install disk(s), but installation is quicker than Windows. Take a look at Mandriva .

Advantages are no viruses, no registry to corrupt, excellent multitasking and good solid applications. A downside is that there is a short sharp learning period to find out what everything is called. (With a few tweaks, you can even run MS programs still (:-))

If you want to dual boot, install Windows first. A Windows install will obliterate the Linux stuff whereas installing Linux later, the Linux boot loader will kindly let you choose.

Good luck,
Martin
