I have been running BOINC with Seti for a while now with no trouble. Yesterday I noticed that my screensaver was blank so I opened the manager and found it empty - no Projects listed. I tried to add Seti back in and got no errors, but after adding the URL and code it simply went back to a blank Project page. When I choose Run Benchmark I am moved to the Messages Tab, but it is blank.

I removed BOINC, and then went and deleted the folder it was in and reinstalled - same thing. Are there some hidden files or registry entries that could be corrupt?

After several reboots for unrelated issues, BIONC started working again - I didn't change anything related to it, so I have no idea what happened, but I'm ok now.

I have what appears to be the same problem! I posted it under "Questions and problems : Windows : BOINC MANAGER DISCONNECTED" and have had some response - but it hasn't helped - it still re-occcurs and only goes away after a few reboots (sometime 1 sometimes over a period of time). If it is the same problem the manager shows "disconnected" in the lower right and if you check task manager (ALT-CNTRL-DEL) you'll see that nonetheless SETI is running OK. I run BOINC 4.25 - WIN XP SP1

Very strange.

BOINC client software > 4.19 is splitted in the "master control program", called the BOINC Daemon (boinc.exe) and the "graphic user interface", called BOINC Manager (boincmgr.exe).

This programs communicate over TCP socket 1043, or in newer releases optional try 31416 if the official port didn't work. The problem is, that there is software out there, that doesn't care about offical ports, i.e. Microsoft software, but other too. This may create a problem where the BOINC Manager loose the connection or can't create a connection to the BOINC daemon and all tabs are empty.

On the other side the BOINC Daemon started and scheduled the project applications. There it may be possible that a problem happens and the application killed the BOINC Daemon in a error situation. The again the connection is lost.

If a problem like this happens, I look at first with the task manager if the application (setiathome_4.xx) is still running and if the BOINC Daemon (boinc.exe) is still to see in taskmanger. Is the CPU usage up to 100 %?

Then I would try to connect to the BOINC Daemon with the open BOINC Manager again, by "select Computer .." with a empty host name or "localhost" as host name.

I would check my personal firewall. Some firewalls may wrongly see the a connect to "localhost" as a not allowed access and block it.

But that it needs some restarts to get it working again feels like a software capturing the port problem. At the end BOINC may be was quicker and get the port at first. ;)

I don't remember if 4.25 could switch the port from 1043 to 31416. You may try the 4.32 release, which is a unconfirmed alpha release, but works good for me.

Danke Schoen Jens!

I don't know how to switch ports so will try 4.32. It may be the firewall, but on my other machine which runs W2K and has the same firewall does not have this problem, although I have others there - my wait-time for the screensaver resets to 9995; and half my results do not compute and take much more CPU time than others with the same WU. I have posted these problems under the Windows part of the Forum.

Also under Windows, there is another thread on this subject. May I ask that you post your answer there too to help those following that thread? Also there someone suggested running BOINCVIEW.
