SOS was picked because it was easy to do and remember even for a beginner in trouble. the meanings of wich came after.

the original was CQD...All Staitions Distress...
Not: come quick dammit...
-·-· --·- -··

The Marconi Yearbook of Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony , 1918 states, "This signal [SOS] was adopted simply on account of its easy radiation and its unmistakable character. There is no special signification in the letter themselves, and it is entirely incorrect to put full stops between them [the letters]." All the popular interpretations of "SOS," "Save or Ship," "Save Our Souls," or "Send Out Succour" are simply not valid. Stations hearing this distress call were to immediately cease handling traffic until the emergency was over and were likewise bound to answer the distress signal.

Tim .. NA .. have you heard ... anything from ... Mrarc ... (Petit Soleil )

I allways enjoyed reading Marc's __ posts ... (Petit Soleil )

Hello there, my name is Marc and I am from Montreal Canada. I am currently living in Paris France since I married a lovely French girl. I own both Canadian and French Nationalities. I have always been fascinated by radio waves. I don't remember it but my parents told me that I was trying to communicate with the TV news speaker at the age of two. That is probably where it all started for me. From CB to amateur radio (VE2MVE) then to professional marine radio officer. I am also electronic engineer and I am currently working as chief radio officer and electronic engineer on board cruise ships. I really enjoy it as it takes me all around the world and I get to see wonderful places and lovely peoples. I like building electronic devices like radio transmitters and antennas. I read a lot of books, mostly science and fiction.

OK you got me there and I apparently need more caffeine because I mis-read that post.. However, a valid SOS is still sent three times just like yelling into a mic "Mayday Mayday Mayday" That is done to ensure the first one or two was not missed..

Luckily it's under an hour :)

I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue.

(actually PON PON is what Coast Guard Kodiak radio says when they break into the emergency channel, usually followed by a report of a vessel either in distress or just plain missing.)

This Day In History | General Interest

LENIN RETURNS:
April 16, 1917

On April 16, 1917, Vladimir Lenin, leader of the revolutionary Bolshevik Party, returns to Petrograd after a decade of exile to take the reins of the Russian Revolution. One month before, Czar Nicholas II had been forced from power when Russian army troops joined a workers' revolt in Petrograd, the Russian capital.

Born Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov in 1870, Lenin was drawn to the revolutionary cause after his brother was executed in 1887 for plotting to assassinate Czar Alexander III. He studied law and took up practice in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), where he associated with revolutionary Marxist circles. In 1895, he helped organize Marxist groups in the capital into the "Union for the Struggle for the Liberation of the Working Class," which attempted to enlist workers to the Marxist cause. In December 1895, Lenin and the other leaders of the Union were arrested. Lenin was jailed for a year and then exiled to Siberia for a term of three years.
