I've set my Preferences on my Account page to:

"Do work while computer is in use? no "

AND

I have also the software set at "Run Based on Preference" and NOT "Run Always"

HOWEVER, my CPU is running at 100% all the time.

This forces me to Suspend the work.

But when I am idle (defined at 3 minutes), then it does NOT turn on (because it is suspended).

I can't have it running while I'm working because it slows me down, but I want it running while I am not working. Besides the setting in the Preferences, is there anything else I can do?

Confused...

How have you installed BOINC; as a service, or running when a user is logged in.

I believe when installed as a service the core client cannot query the mouse/keyboard for activity. This causing the "Do work while computer is in use?" to have no effect.

I am not sure if I have installed BOINC as a service or running when a user is logged in.

How do I know?

And how do I change it so that I don't have the problem described above?

Thank you!

You would have had to have selected the 'run as a service' option when installing BOINC.

Another question, do you have additional preference venues set up, such as work, home, or school?

How do I undo that and choose a different option? Should I reinstall?

No. Just one place.

Thank you!

You need first to uninstall Boinc, best start over the PC afterwards and then run the installation once again by choosing the service installation.

If you still have WU's to crunch maybe the best thing is to finish these ones first (not sure about that is I install always the same configuration).

Read the News at the homepage
Have a look at the Technical News
Look if your question is not answered at the Boinc Wiki

Best greetings, Thierry

If as part of the service configuration under the logon segment you select "Allow Service to interact with desktop"

This should get you around the problem
