I was wondering what happens when you have a computer with 3 windows accounts on it: Parents, Kid, and Guest. I want to install it on my friend's computer(kid) and was wondering if i have it running when idle for like 5 minutes if it will still run when their account is idle but their parents isn't. Like if its just on the 1 account and set like that, will it run while the parents are using their account, since the kid's is technically idle. Does that make sense? any info would be great |

I don't really understand your set up (parents, Kid, guest) unless your talking about the "windows login as" screen. Seti/boinc already is set to "low" priority, this means that it only runs when you/anyone else isn't doing anything. When you need the CPU for any other program, seti/boinc stops using the processor. does this help? |

Welcome, Marvin. Paranoid android, I presume? I do understand the setup, but I don't run XP (It's mostly OS X and some Linux). If memory serves, the XP accounts are not preemptive nor simultaneous (You can't have multiple users on the same machine at the same time). If I'm right about that, then it doesn't matter who's account is idle, because as soon as a user logs off, the apps that were run by that user, terminate. In Unix and Linux you can get around that, but at the cost of having to share the BOINC data files among all the users. Even so, the kernel manages the CPU time. I bet someone around here will give a far better explanation than I can soon enough. Once again, welcome! |

yeah im talking about the windows login screen. You CAN be logged in as multiple users at a time. I know this, i have friends who do it, they each run AIM on their accounts. At this house they dont log off of names, they just switch users. My friend will stay logged in when her parents use their name. So yeah... I think that first reply helps, anyone else know different? Are you talking about Fast User Switching? If you want SETI to run all the time, then you would need to install BOINC to run as a service, then its not associated with any user. Installing for 'All Users' and using Fast User Switching sounds bad news as you could end up with as many BOINCs running as you have users. If you're not using fast user switching, and want BOINC running all the time, then you can install as All Users or Service. 'All Users' would run as long as someone was logged in. Overall, I would go for a Service Install, but if I understand it correctly, you lose all graphics options if you do. |

Yes thank you! They use fast user switching. So installing it as a service it will just run once, but will show up on all of the user's screens when they login? I'd hate for 3 boincs be running at the same time. But this sounds like the solution, to do it as a service. do you have 3 unique Boinc accounts on that ONE computer? Unique account = different "Account Keys" (the ones Seti mailed to you/others). If so, then NO you wouldn't want to run more than one at any time. It'd divide up the CPU usage and slow down the processing of each. Does anyone here know how to help this person, I'm near the end of my ability. tony |

No i dont have 3 boinc accounts...but i dont need to. The one guy said i could set it as a service so it would run for all 3 only once...right? Or something. I will be sure to test it out before i actually leave it on there, if it runs 3 separate times then i will just uninstall it. To install as a service you need to have ADMIN rights (logged on as admin). good luck tony |
