And to show that your work has been validated... though you don't really need credits to do that...

They are just like money, except you can't buy anything with them so you are in no danger of your wife taking them. They are spend-proof, divorce-proof, and un-taxed. The kid's don't ask you for them, the United Way does not make you feel guilty about hoarding them, nobody breaks into your hose to steal them, and they do not depreciate. They are in every way superior to real money - so much so that lots of us spend our useless "real" money to build great honking stacks of computers to get more of them.

You keep your credits in your socks!

You can claim credit for finding ET if you got credits for the work unit with the WOW signal.

The (very good) manual for Boinc is the BOINC Powered Projects Documentation by Paul D. Buck and the FAQ therein.

For information regarding Credits look here!

when i look at the stats and see all of the credits that people the world over have accumulated, it makes me feel good to know that these people share my thoughts that we are not alone. it also reinforces my belief that we can work together to achieve a common goal. just my two cents. :)

How do you know there are not people doing this to prove there is nobody else out there. A point to ponder.

why bother disproving something that has yet to be proven? whatever your reason, keep crunching. if we don't seek, we don't find. that's for sure.

Regardless the common goal is still in tact. Does ET Exist?

I think you ponder too much. The whole point is why YOU do it, do not try and figure out the impossible. I do it for my reasons, you do it for yours, the 2 reasons just happen to meet at this project.
Take the adult bookstore, why would a young 20 something aged man go in?
Why would a 60 some year old woman go in?
The 2 reasons could be totally different, but the store owner just cares that people are IN there AND buying something!
Seti in our case just cares that someone is crunching the units. Not our motives for doing it.

I knew i'd get a few feathers flying with that comment...you all are to gullible. Say one thing that is 1/100000000th out of the norm and people fly in with their Einstein theorys of why your wrong and they are right. This can be quite amussing.

PS> I think the 60 year old lady went in to get her pervert 20 year old son out of the adult book store.

it's not a matter of being "right" or "wrong." it's people giving opinions, exchanging thoughts and ideas on why we are doing this. discussions don't have to separate us, they can bring us together. :)

In my profile, I point out that given the parameters for success I don't think we'll find a signal. I do it because:

a) Just seeking the answer advances our scientific tools, like the development of BOINC itself.
b) Assumption is a bad thing. Though my reasoning has some logic behind it, I don't know everything. After all, people just assumed we'd never see a live coelacanth either. If we seek but don't find, we're closer to knowing than assuming.
c) I simply hope I'm wrong.
