I am fairly new to BOINC so please bear with me. I was a cruncher since Sept of 2000 on Classic so I have a little' experience. :)

I signed up for Setiathome---my first love--12 March 05, other than the short delays, witch happen in computing, I am more that satisfied!

Ok enuf of the sweetalk!

My question is this: I just signed up for Einstein about 5 min ago! I set Seti for '90' and Einstein for '10' under the preferences. Now about the 'default' 60 minutes between applications...should I modify this also? What I am trying to do is use my computing power 90% Seti and 10% Einstein. To me switching every 60 min is a 50/50 distribution.

Am I missing something in the translationor do I need to tweek something on my preferences? Any help would be appreciated!

P.S. If anyone checks I have 4 computers on Seti but only 1 on Einstein---the one with the higest average credit.

It won't switch more often that 60 minutes, but with 90/10 preferences, it'll run SETI for 9 hours, then Einstein for 1.

Change the switch to 120 minutes and it'll run SETI for 18 hours, then Einstein for 2.

No, you don't need to change the 60 minutes settting.
BOINC will work it out.

So with your settings 90/10: For every 100 'slots' (60 mins each), SETI will get 90 of them, Einstein gets 10.

This holds whatever the 'slot' length.

That's how it's supposed to work....

Thanks Ned I understand better now.

Another question, though.... only running one (1) hour out of ten (10) that means that Einstein will take about 10 hours to complete a unit ( well, at least on my machine)---am I correct?

It is saying 9:30:35 right now---connected about 7min ago

Thanks in advance for any info!

Einstein units are about twice the size of SETI units, so I'm guessing you do a SETI work unit in about 4 hours.

It'll take 9 1/2 hours of actual processing, but it'll only get one hour out of every ten -- so it'll take about 4 days if you run 24 hours/day.

Ok, great! Just what I needed to know---thanks, Ned! I need to adjust my 'contact to server' by 1 day otherwise my Einstein units will be late---thanks again!

Obviously, turning in late is not a good idea.. but it's interesting to play with the numbers and see how you make out..

I'm currently running all of the boinc projects.. (SETI, Einstein, LHC, Climate and predictor) all set to "100" (..and Pirates at "10" on one machine only, LHC is currently out of work units.) .. but only setup 3 projects on each of my machines (I have 4 machines running) Also, I set my check-in at "1.25 days" .. this will give me more work units at a check in.. whole idea of the strategy there is, when a project goes down for a day.. I'll not likely run out of work units for that project.. if I do, then I've got the other projects cranking (like, I'm out of LHC work units right now.. but I've still got work to crank on.) If I want one project to be "favored".. like SETI .. I just have that one running on more machines than the other projects.. Still, the basic strategy is: Keep all machines cranking!!!

Meanwhile.. Have Fun!
