I know theres lots of info on both cache and time to complete, but I have a question... First lets see if my understanding is correct: The cache size is determined from the general settings, in my case .5 days (just while I'm testing) So does BOINC consider the benchmark for how long each WU takes and then works out time to complete then how much to download? But what happens when not all of my PC's are on 24/7... Does BOINC take that into account when considering time to complete? Hope someone can make sense of that :P Cheers Gav Nothing is 'fool-proof', someone will always invent a better fool! |

Yes on all counts, Boinc "learns" how long you take but it takes multiple units to do it. |

Thanks Mikey, I've just converted to BOINC from classic (cautiously I might add) and I was running Seti-Queue on my server which was clever in keeping track of how much each pc did per day then making sure its cache reflected that as well as having a WU overdue time built in hence why I was concerend about my slower pc's (sometimes only on for 3-4 hours a day) conforming to the same cache settings as my faster pc and sending WU's overdue. My mind is at rest... although my CPU is running hot :P Cheers Gav Nothing is 'fool-proof', someone will always invent a better fool! |

You could also set your slower PCs to a different group (school, work, or home) and leave your faster ones on the default. That way you could set up your slower ones to only cache something like .25 days worth of work, and your other ones to cache more. <img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=567" /> <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page">BOINC Wiki</a> <a href="http://www.tamaness.hostrocket.com/BOINC_team.html">Gideontech BOINC team!</a> |

Cache settings, now, should be more driven by the %time connected to the Internet and the number of projects attached to the computer than anything else. If you have high conectivity (DSL, Cable Modem) a setting between 0.1 to 1.0 days is best ... tending to the lower edge with each additional project. If you are on only one project then 1 to 4 days is better. If you navigate to the section in the BOINC Web Site Owner's Manual for Preferences I have a discussion there (a little old, it needs updating) that talks about the interaction of the settings ... (note, the setting no longer uses upper and lower limits, the scheduler gives you work based on what you are likely to do). Do not go above 7 days ... it gets ugly when you do that and it is not usually needed ... > But what happens when not all of my PC's are on 24/7... Does BOINC take that > into account when considering time to complete? The newer and improved scheduler will be using the %up, %connected, etc. and the return rate per PC and issue work accordingly. > Hope someone can make sense of that :P Why wouldn't we? Of course we may be answering a different question than the one you asked ... |
