I just got Fedora Core 4 Test 1 installed on a PowerMac G3 400MHz, and I don't want to use OSX on it, as it will jsut be a file server ATM. Does anyone have SETI/BOINC compiled for Linux PPC, and if you don't, can you give me instructions on how to do so?

Is this a blue & white? FC3 or YDL4 might be better since FC4 is way beta. I think it can also do Darwin 7?

I'm currently in a similar situation - I've been trying to compile the SETI client for the past few days with limited success [see 13182]. So far, I know that autoconf, m4, gcc, gcc-c++, and their dependencies, are required packages (I'm not doing the GUI version).

FC3 is at fedoraproject.org/fedorappc/FC-3/. The announcement of the FC/PPC release and a list of other downloadable goodies is here. Be aware that the boot disc for FC3 wasn't blessed properly, so there's a workaround ISO you might need to download.

The reason why I asked is because I don't remember off-hand if the B&W G3s were New World or not. FC3 doesn't "do" Old World (As I found out with the 6360), so I had to put Yellow Dog 3.0.1 on that.

I did a full YDL4 install (read: I chose "everything" in the anaconda installer) on the TiBook quite some time back, and I remember SETI ran a few WUs. Since YDL4 is a repackaged FC2, I see no reason why FC3 shouldn't work.

AFAIK, the B&W is New World. I think I'm going to try YDL4.0.1 on it. I'm download ing the ISO's now. It says you need all the CD's, is tha true?

Have you considered debian? It has a wide range of hardware platforms,
and is pretty up to date if you switch to the "unstable" distribution.

Yes - I compiled it under both YDL3 and 4 (Good thing I found my notes!). I'm not sure what the package dependancies were (Again, I'm an idiot and chose to install everything), but it definitely worked.

For YDL 4 you'll only need the first 4 CDs - Those are the ppc binaries. The remaining CDs (5-8) are sources. The same is true of FC3, with the exception of the boot ISO.

Be aware that there are two "YDL4"s - The original (2004-11-07) and an updated one (2005-02-23?). In either case, you'll want to yum... there's a few kinks in the packages that need fixing - most notably affected are sound and sleep.

Darwin is probably the safest bet, but it's the biggest pain in the since it doesn't carry any GUI, and I haven't been able to get QT to compile.

I could send you the sources I compiled under debian, they should work on ppc, too.

I'm not sure if I could get my setup to cross-compile a ppc version, though...

What would make it easier is if the sources were posted the same way that the precompiled downloads are. I'm never sure if the tarball I download is actually intended to be compiled - It's supposed to be a "work-in-progress snapshot", right? Why not put a page that says "Here's the sources we used in order to make BOINC v4.25" so we'll all be compiling bona fide source code.

There is the BOINC Menubar GUI ... not bad at all ... it does not have all the bells and whistles of the UCB BOINC Manager ... but as a way to get going it works quite well ...
